Default Cant get gas into the tank

I just bought a 99 Camaro. I stopped at a gas a station on the way home and went to fill it up. I started pumping and the gas came right back out. It was if there was a rag stuffed into the filler pipe.

I could not squeeze the nozzle slow enough to keep that from happening. Gas will go in there, but its trapping air in the pipe somehow.

Is this a known issue for this car?

Any help would be great.

Thanks

Happened to me a few weeks ago. I hit a huge hole in the parking lot of a store and went to pump gas, would let about 50 cents worth in than stop and run back out. Went back to thr store and hit the hole again and went back to the gas station and it took gas just fine. You must have the backflow/trap door stuck. Smack the tank with a rubber mallet or hit a hole.

Doesnt the pump nozzle push that door in when you insert the nozzle?

A trailer hitch and exhaust system were installed at sometime. Im not sure if anything was moved to install them.

Sounds like your tank isn't venting properly when trying to fill it. Do you typically "top off" your tank when putting gas in? Overfilling can cause problems with the evap charcoal canister filling with fuel and can cause the condition you've described. I replaced one on a Tahoe not long ago. May be something you might want to look at....

I have had this problem before. its some pressure release valve sensor not working. but for a quick fix. you can go to the engine bay and release the fumes mannually. There is a little green cap on the drivers side, bye where the fuel line connects to the rails. remove this cap, and there will be a little valve stem. (like the one on a tire) push this stem in to release the fumes. Note! you have to let ALL the air out before you will be able to pump gas again.

I Hope this helps. and makes sense.

It must have EVAP. I did see the green cap mentioned above.

I think its something around the fill tube area. Isnt there a vent tube that runs next to the fill tube? We have had a tropical storm around here and have not had a chance to look under the car.

umm...not sure on that. but try what i had explained. if that fixes your problem, then you can pretty much narrow it down to a bad evap cylinoid.

NHRAMAN, yes F-bodies have EVAP. there is an EVAP canister on the drivers side of the engine bay and there is also an EVAP/charcoal canister above the gas tank

Yes, it is a known issue for the car. I have seen it on here several times. Search and you should find more threads on it.

I find plenty of threads about this issue. A lot of them either point to the EVAP solonoid or charcoal canister.

Default Update

Well, it appears I have some missing parts. I removed the panal behind the drivers rear tire to locate the charcoal can, its not there. Where did it go? Here is a pic of what is in there. Notice the nice new hose clamp.

So the big question here is, what goes here besides the charcoal can?

Anyone have a pic of what it should look like?

After a trip to the dealer, he had a better diagram of where the parts should be. The charcoal can is near the front of the gas tank, not where my Chilton manual said in the pic above. My plan is to get under the car this weekend.

After getting under the car, it looks like a real pain to get to the charcoal can and purge solonoid.

I would have to drop the exhaust, trailer hitch then the gas tank.

Am i still on the right track with this issue?

Here the latest.

I ran a very long coat hanger in the filler neck and hit nothing.

I was also able to test the purge solonoid and that appears to be working fine. I took off the vacuum line with the car running. I could here a vacuum leak. I took of the power connection and could hear/feel the difference between being on or off.
