Given that you know the previous owner (that owned it for the majority of the car's life), $2500 is a good deal. Things will go wrong if you go ***** out from the get go, but taking it easy and replacing things the correct way (like previous posts have said) will help you out immensely.

If you plan on modding the car, ie. replacing rear end, tranny, and engine with bigger better things then I would buy it.
If you are just looking for a stock car to drive around in I would look elsewhere.
