I was betting you had a '99 just by reading the title of your post - it's caused by low battery voltage. There's a TSB on it for the '99's to replace the instrument cluster, but a good battery will make it go away. TSB doesn't mention the gauges sweep but usually happens with the trip reset.

I have a 99 too, and I had the gauge sweep not too long ago. It's fun really, just pretend that you accelerated that fast and pegged out.
My trip reset on me tonight too :-(. But I took the battery out lol.

I recognize this is an old thread but same thing happened to me today - believe I have a good battery but it is about 5 degrees outside and that can cause drop in voltage.
My gas gauge got a mind of its own at the same time and goes way past full and is stuck there. Hoping when weather warms up this will also correct itself.
Anyone else in cold weather have same problem?

My car has done this in the past & is currently doin it again with this cold spell we have been having. Its due to low voltage as stated already. If your running a cheaper brand & at either stock or lower rating its gonna happen. You need to buy a good battery like a Optima red top. I did a self test this last time & bought a cheapo WalMart battery to replace my cheapo O'Riellys battery. Both batteries lasted about a year & started doin this during winter.
I'm getting ready to get a Optima red top & stop messing with these cheaper lower amp batteries.

^^ Ditto. Tried to remedy this problem with $200 optima yellow tops. I killed them absolutely dead in no more than 5 days. After going through 4 yellow tops I said eff it and got an autozone duralast gold for $80, problem resolved. Optimas are crap.

First, I'm very happy with my yellow top. It's at least five years old. It was in my van and lives on in the T/A.
Second, there was a TSB on the gauge/trip odometer issue. GM would swap out the entire gauge cluster to one with a different chip. The problem is worse when very cold, low battery voltage conditions or if the car sits for an extended period.
My car has this problem and I doubt GM will service it. I'm wondering if there's a fix we could do.
The TSB number is 990849009.
