oil change question
i saw a couple of other threads and people were saying 5.5-6qts? is that with the factory oil pan?
by the way im using castrol synthatic 5-30 with a wix filter; just wanted to know what your thoughts were on that as well. thanks again guys!
If you're using the standard "short" filter, then that will account for the other 1/2 quart, so 5 1/2. If the "tall" filter is used, you'll need 6.

the answer is the full mark is as high as possible without having the crankshaft whip into oil sitting in the pan, otherwise it'll splash oil and cause aeration in the oil.
On most dipsticks on a v-8 you can go 1/4" to 1/2" over the full mark with no problems, especially if it's a measurement when the engine's cold and all the oil is in the pan.
i also happened to overfill mine last oil change because i was pouring from 5qt jugs and the following morning when I checked I was about 1.5" over the full mark. And it had felt like the engine was a little sluggish the previous day, so I just drained a little and was all good. I use a PF61 filter, the long one, and I always use at least 6 qts when refilling if I'm pouring from quart bottles.
The oil pan on the ls1 is reported to not be the greatest in high G turns and the oil can go to one side and expose the oil pump pickup, which is why roadcourse guys always add 1 extra quart. I just saw an add in gm hitech mag about a new baffle for the ls1 oil pan too.
so if you buy quart bottles, buy at least 6 and if you let the oil drain out of the pan until it stops draining then just add 6 quarts.

Why not use the dip stick? That's what it's there for.
