Default Coolant problems........HELP!

OK guys I need a little input.

Yesterday after a hard session of lapping I drove the car to the office and worked all night. I go out to the car and start it. IMMEDIATELY the low coolant light is on. I figured "no big deal, I'll just let it warm up and the water will expand and at least get the light to go off until I get home to add some fluid". Well I get out of the parking lot and immediately notice that wonderfull sweet smell of coolant in the exauhst. So I pull over and pop the radiator cap and per inside. BONE DRY! I milk the car to the nearest service station to add water to it. It took quite a it, but the temp came back to normal pretty fast.

First thing out of the ordinary I noticed:
While adding water with the engine running (to circulate the cool water to the motor) I noticed that water was coming out of the recirculater VERY intermittently (its the little hole that sprays water into the radiator right under the cap).

Second thing I noticed:
On the freeway the temps stayed normal. But if I had to stop and the revs came to an idle it would start heating up right away. And anyone with a 99+ car knows that if the temp needle moves a hair thats a fairly large temp increase. But as soon as the revs got above 1800 the temp would drop. This makes me think now that with the first problem I noticed that the water pump is going bad.

when I got home I noticed NO leaks anywhere under the car. and when I pulled the cap off the radiator and the water level was down about 3-4inches. Where could it be going? And from the above info would you gather that the water pump is going bad?

any inut would be appreciated.

Top it up completely cold, then run it and top it up for 4-5 minutes.

If you are down 3-4" inches the next day you are using coolant or leaking it.

In my case I had a blown head gasket.

How do you know when you have a blown head gasket? Does it make a ticking noise or would coolant leak from the side of the head?
I cant seem to find out whats wrong with my car, got that same coolant smell and a ticking noise from the driver side head?

Pressurize the system with a pump and check for leaks. If you smell it out of the exhaust then most than likely it's a head gasket.

Once the head gasket really goes, you will have a James Bond trail of white smoke behind you... You'll know.
