Im looking at putting a fast intake on my 2000 trans am. I want to get the best horsepower. Im looking at getting the 90 mm but I dont want to have to tune my car a ton or have it run like ***. So 78 mm or 90 mm. Need some help

90mm?!! Is this a dedicated drag car?? If you're just looking for a mean street ride without boost one way or another, then 90mm is too big. When thinking 90mm, a large bore and stroke along with a huge supercharger or turbo and headers-only exhaust comes to mind. Is that your car? I think it'll be a waste of money, but don't exactly take my word for it as I'm no engineer. Whatever way you go, you'll add power, looks and more mods for your list!

If you have only bolt ons right now i would shoot for just the LS6 intake. Its not as expensive as the 78 or the 90mm intakes. Also it will put a nice bit of power down over the standard LS1 Intake. What mods do you currently have? And what are you looking for out of the car?

I've been considering a fast intake for my stock ls1 that will get a few minor mods for now. I've got the July 2008 issue of Gm High Tech Performance in front of me and they did a dyno test of the 92mm intake. They don't list any mods to the '01 z28 that they put it on, but they said that with the stock ls6 manifold and TB it made 398 hp 376 lb-ft of torque at the wheels. They re-baselined it that day at 390 hp and 369 lb-ft. With the 92mm intake they made 411 hp and 382 lb-ft of torque. the graph in the mag starts at 1500rpm and shows no loss of low end torque.

That engine is definitely more powerful than stock but it's no giant cube or blower motor either. So it looks like the 90mm or 92mm may not be too big for a slightly modded ls1. Anyone have any thoughts about the numbers I listed from the mag? thanks

that engine ist atleast cammed though, for a bolt ons car it wouldn't be worth it.

no that car has a h/c combo on it...the blue car...yea the cam is pretty nasty too so i dont think you wouls see more than what a ls6 would have to offer

If I may, what I would like to know cost aside, and I think 2000 t/a was asking more along the same lines, on a slightly modded ls1 is a 90mm going to cause a loss of torque? I'd rather not buy an ls6 manifold just to turn around and buy a FAST if I get heads and a cam. Say I start with headers, FAST intake and a tune, and plan to later get heads and a cam, would it be better to have the FAST at first or just stay with the stock manifold until i get heads and a cam? Or even if I never got heads and a cam would I be less satisfied with the FAST over an ls1 or ls6 manifold?
