Default I fought the car, and the car won

This POS won't stop ticking!!!!

I did the header install, and today was the fun day of doing the restrictor mod....Damn was it hard to get the valve assembly off the long metal tube....Anyhow after fighting that I checked each spark plug about a 1000 times and they are all good to go, and reattached all the emissions stuff....

Started the car, quiet for about 5 secs then bam tick tick tick tick tick etc etc etc.....

So I now know its not the spark plugs, not the AIR setup, it must be ANOTHER header leak in there.

I came to this cnclusion because.
1) the ticking sounds definetly definetly comes from the passenger side
2) When the car is in neautral (400* rpms)the ticking noise almost stops and tocks maybe every 3 secs, when the car is in D or R (500*rpms) it goes back to ticking every second

Anyone else got an idea? Or do you agree with me?
And its not the normal tick you get from headers, this is pretty damn loud, though it did seem to quiet down a tad after the restrictor mod

If it comes and goes, it could be a fuel injector. 01 and 02 cars are known for this...Or a bad weld in that right side header....Whad did you use for header gaskets? Best of luck. WJ.

Sure you have the gaskets for the AIR and EGR connections?

Fercocity-I used the gaskets for the AIR, but no EGR for 02 model.

WSJ-I used the GM header gasket...Could that be the reason for the ticking if I put it backwards, I could have done that by being careless. I think it might be a bad weld though. I already had 1 on the other side.
If it were a fuel injector, wouldn't it of been noticable prior to the headers? Plus it is pretty constant, it just happens to "slow down" while the car is at 4000 rpms, above that it ticks constantly, and at 1500+ rpms I can't hear it cause of the catback.

Ozzy- Lifter? Why after the header install? But I do have a "wet ticking sound" like marbles in a can of oil....But thats been since day 1 and I am pretty sure its piston slap, anyhow it goes away after 15 minutes of driving.

Starting to contemplate if I should ditch the headers and go with a torque convertor and then just make my car bling bling? I guess low 13's will do

check ball in the air system. it happened on mine.. just make a plate with a smaler hole in place of the air gaskets, and it might stop...

Did you use the stock GM gaskets that are metal?

I'll check the header flange tomorrow and see whats up.

I did use the GM metal gaskets.
I am gonna punch myself in the head if thats what it is.

I can't wait for the day for this to go away. Don't know if this is relevant or not but on occasions i'll see a white smoke cloud come out of the rear through my rearview mirror, and its not even cold yet here?

I know blue means craked head or oil leaking?, black means rich/lean whichever it is.

Two comments, none of which will help:
1) I love your thread title. Bobby Fuller Four?

2) 5000 rpm in reverse? Where did you do that? Steering at those speeds in reverse is scary, right?

LOL, thats my bad, drop a "0" next to all the rpms ranges.

I meant 400 not 4000 and 500 not 5000

To locate the source, listen with a piece of heater hose. White smoke sometimes indicates a leaking head gasket (water in the cylinder).

Good luck!

Yeah, I remember lots of OLD songs.

Thanks, I'll pass the TB info on to Bret. He's "Bauer Racing". I'm the ol' man. I get to test C5 TB mods. Tough job, but someone has to do it.

If you didn't put the restrictor mod on the AIR tubes BEFORE you started it (After the header install) you probably burnt up the check valves. It's gonna tick till you replace them.

Did you torque the header in the proper sequence and the proper torque?

If you can't hear it above a certain rpm, it's probably not a leak. A leak would get louder with the rpms. The check valve's just gonna tick pretty much the same all the time.

Dope-I replaced the check valves, they are brand new with the 3/16 hole in a block off plate. Also I couldn't possibly torque the nuts for the headers, no room. Corsa gets loud with headers, so higher RPMS, I can't hear the ticking, but I do hear a whisteling sound (sort of without the loud pitch)

Soundengineer- No cam here

S2002S- Leaking head gasket, please tell me your talking about the "header" gaskets, and not something where the engine needs to get torn down.

I think you may have done this already, but here it is again. Are you sure about the wires and plugs? Have you opened the hood in the dark and looked for a spark?
