Default Alternator Wiring Question

Ok, Im swapping my Alternator in my 99 Trans Am (LS1) and I unscrewed the wire that bolts to the back that goes to the battery, but there is a clip where a four prong plug is supposed to plug into, but I dont remember unplugging anything from it and cant find a loose wire anywhere to save my life.

What wire goes here so that I can try and trace it?

Thats the exciter wire. Yep, the one that 'tells' the alternator to start charging.
Bad diagnosis on that alternator replacement, plugging the wire back in would most likely solve the problem.
This is why I always say FIND THE PROBLEM, so many people assume.
Not charging=need new alternator, etc.

What wire goes there? I don't know how to answer that.
The one thats hanging I guess?
It can't be that far away.

Is this a car you're putting together or have you just been driving it and one day this wire disappeared.
I'm asking because if you're doing a swap I can give you a PCM pinout location to trace down. But if you were driving this every day, look hard, the wire is near by.

I had the alternator tested and they said it needed to be rebuilt or replaced. The wire I think got pulled out when I tried pulling the alternator out to take it to get it tested. So now I have to go fishing and find the exciter wire.

Good luck, it's a real thin wire. Maybe I can come back with a pic in a few minutes.

Its a little tiny bastard, like smaller than a cocktail straw. It'll be coming out of one the the blacl wiring harnesses hanging down in that area above the alternator. Hopefully there's enough wire left to strip it and splice a new wire or the old wire back together with metal crimpers and the heat shrink covers. Don't solder it back together. I did it quite eqasily but I had plenty of wire to work with. I used a piece of new wire to splice inbetween when I broke mine.

Heres the wire and plug end. It's in the section of harness where the drivers side O2 and temp sensor plugs are located.
