Default iron heads on 2001 LQ4?

Did iron heads come on 2001 model LQ4's? I bought an LQ4 off craigslist this weekend and it was listed as a 2001 and the guy swore up and down that that's what it was. But I thought 2001's were the year they started putting aluminum heads on the 6.0L motors? I looked at the back of the block by the flywheel and saw two stamps on the block, one said "6.0L" and the other said "GM SMCO". What does that mean? I'm screwed if this motor is from a '99 or '00 because the crankshaft is longer than '01+ motors and I won't be able to use a T56 trans behind it. Please help!

I snapped this pic with my phone, can anyone tell if it's a '99/'00 block or a '01+ just from the pic?

Well the heads on my block are definitly iron. I just stuck a magnet on them...so now I guess what I really need to know is if '01 blocks had iron heads.
