Default Running rich........sometimes

If the MAF is not working would it run rich or lean? I was thinking lean sense it is air the computer is not reading.

It doesnt seem to be running rich all the time. The first day i drove it, it seemed to be fine at any trottle position. Then i started noticing a miss while cruising at any speed, it started idling just a little ruff and stronge fuel smell, but does fine at WOT. The next day i drove it, it does fine, smooth idle, and its not missing while cruising. The next time i drive it i notice a miss a few times but idle is ruff agian and fuel smell is back. I have only 60 miles on new exhaust tips and the are covered with carbon build up.

Variable:
!AIR
First drive was with 1/4 tank of 4 month old 87 octane.
Next drives were with 93 octane.
Motor has been sitting for atleast 4 months.

I feel like i just keep going and going so i will end it here. Thanks for any help

If the maf is not working I would assume it would be rich down low in the rpms and a little bit leaner up top and you would have a SES light, so let me know. There are a ton more variables. If the fuel smell is sharp to the nose then hydrocarbons and lean if more vaporous and dense smell then rich.

If the MAF quits working it will run rich (OPEN loop operation) and you will most certainly have an SES light on your dash.

Would the MAF just quit working. The fillaments are not brocken. Whats the plug directly infront the MAF on the air box. I havent put a tester on it yet. Its running so rich its putting carbon on my bumper, lisence plate, and ground. Your hand will be covered in a couple minutes. I noticed that two of my spark plug wires had white spots on them.
Thanks

Intermittent misfiring is probably not the MAF's
fault. Air box sensor is the IAT (inlet air temp)
sensor. Also an unlikely suspect (though if hosed
could push you to too much or too little spark
advance).

I would start with plugs & wires.

The motor only has 20,000 miles on it. Could an 02 sensor have anything to do with it. I just had new exhaust put on. Maybe on of them were damaged.?

If you have a bad O2 sensor you WILL get a DTC (which results in an SES light.)

Any chance that you have an exhaust leak? This would introduce outside air to the O2 sensor on that bank thereby fooling it into thinking that the exhaust is lean. As a result your Ltrim on that bank would go positive and more fuel would be added. You'de be running rich and the PCM wouldn't know it.
