wow, i feel dumb. That is the tool i was talking about to check the gap, i didn't realize that it opened the gap also.

to even ask these questions. 
There is also a little tool, available at all the parts store, that checks the gap, and also has a little hook, that allows you to properly hook onto the electrode, and bend it back, in case you gap it a little too wide.
I believe the TR55 comes pre gaped @ .045. I've gaped them to .050, but I've also had the same results, just dropping them in out of the box.

at O'reillys the difference is less 1.99-2.59 so for .60c more I'd get the platinum and double the life of the plugs that is if the tr55 is a copper plug - I'm pretty lazy so why replace plugs often and in 4th gens its NO fun at all!
