Default Wierd powersteering prob

I finally got around to changing it. Got everything off and put back on. Fill it with some fluid. And start it up...and turn the wheel and i hear a loud loud grinding sound!!!!! i look in the resivor and it turns really milky. The liquids like a mudding brown color. It also smelt like something was burning(i couldn't tell if it was just because it began to overflow onto the headers or not. Any help would be grea ti need to get her running asap.

Sounds like air in the system, as it works out it will quiet down. Seen it happen many times at the shop. Most likely what is going on.

Air in the fluid will cause it to be milky in appearance and will make ALOT of noise.

Just keep working the wheel back and forth it will go away, BUT as far as your burning smell you need to figure that out before running it very long in case its more than oil on the headers/engine etc

Thanks alot buddy. I noticed it seems to not be as noisey now. Im thinkning the smell was just the fluid running over unto the headers. That thing was noisey as all get out tho!

Yeah they'll do that, sounds the same as when you run out of fluid. The longer it goes the quieter it will get, some pumps say to give like 300 miles break in for the noise to go away, or maybe its 500, hell I dont read the paper that comes with them anymore but its alot of miles.

Get the air out of the system asap. Air in the steering fluid is not good, and causes heat. You want your pump to be pumping fluid, not air and power steering fluid.

Jack the car up and purge the rack and pinion the correct way to get rid of the air.

Keep a close watch on fluid level in the reservoir, because as the air escapes the fluid level will go down.
