Question What Fire Extinguisher?

I want to permanently mount a fire extinguisher in the car, but Im not sure what kind do get.

For like 50 bucks I could get a standard fire extinguisher from Lowes, but Im not sure what that stuff would do to the paint or other surfaces.

Jegs and Summit sell some called HalGuard. They are Halotron I fire extinguishers that wont hurt other surfaces and leave no residue.
But these are around 150 bucks.

What are you guys carrying? Any experience with the regular extinguishers and what that stuff does to paint? Also you think 2.5lb would be a good size?

Im leaning towards spending the extra 100 bucks, cause I figure if someday I actually had to use the thing and I got that crap on the hood or fenders in the process, that would end up costing a lot more that $100.

Thanks!

From what I have saw with the Haltron products they work well. They are rated Class B/C which is for a flammable liquid and electrical components. A 2.5# extinguisher is small and you'll have to catch the fire early and start to discharge it quick enough before the fire spreads/grows, you'll have about 10(2.5# extinguisher) seconds before the extinguisher is empty after to start to discharge.

If you look around you can find an extinguisher cheaper than what Summit is selling them for

you can get a CO2 extinguisher. it won't leave a residue and is pretty cheap. They are good for electronics and will put out anything a BC extinguisher will. The haloron, if it is like Halon, displaces O2 which means it can litterlaly take your breath away.

Halon was banned in 1994. With a 2.5# Haltron extinguisher you'll damn near have to discharge it inside the car and remain inside for it to be harmful. The health effects when compared to a CO2 extinguisher are almost the same.

Just to complete this thread.. For now, I installed a B/C Auto fire extinguisher that is Sodium Bicarbonate. I figure this might make a mess if I had to use it, but it shoudnt be corrosive.
I made a little bracket so it mounts off the front of the driverseat.
(It rides along as the seat moves forward/backward)

Anyone else have pictures of where they mounted their fire extinguishers?

You could also mount it in between the two back seats in the back out of the way just a thought

CO2 fire extingusihers are too bulky and expensive for a car. Sodium Bicarb is cheapest and Halotron is a good choice. An ABC rated extinguisher will put out any class of fire and is recommended over the sodium bicarb.
