most people use the crank bolt as the support for the middle of the puller, Just make sure you have it threaded in enough so that you dont destroy any threading on the crank. The arms on the puller should be on the inside of the pulley (you'll see three tabs) as well or else you could break the pulley. Its on there tight but it will come off.

hold it center, make sure the arms are on the tabs and slowly tighten the bolt until it can hold itself up on its own pressure. keep turning until it comes off.

My puller had a cone shaped piece on the end of the bolt that didn't mate well to the bolt head with it's bumpy raised lettering. I solved the probem by center drilling a cone shape into the bolt head on my lathe. Any machine shop should do this for a minimal charge. Other wise the puller will walk around on the head and never pull straight.

hmm, that was a good idea. my puller had the same conical end to but after enough pressure it wore down and flattened out and was able to stay flat on the bolt.

Another thing that helps is to put some WD-40 on the threads of the puller. Turns a lot easier. I have a flat piece of metal that I put on the end of the crank so I don't have to have any bolt in there to risk damaging the crank threads.

Not sure if this is a good idea but it worked for me to get the pulley the last bit off. a 3/4 socket extension will fit perfectly down the crank bolt hole and will rest against the crank. You can get the extension to the exact length needed to pull the pulley all the way off so you dont even have to wiggle it.
