Default No to open headers

So last night my buddy was taking to this party. Of course I was driving and he had me go over these railroad tracks, which had to be the bumpiest tracks ever. Well right when i started to cross them I knew I was going to scrap my exhaust(lowered car with LTs ). Once I got done I heard the dreaded noise. My damn ypipe got ripped off. I was about 15 mins from my buddies house and 45 mins from my house. I had to drive home last night with open headers. It was ok for the first 2 mins, but then I just got annoyed. Now I have to go to some places today. If anyone actually likes running open headers all the time your crazy. Luckily I still have a warranty on my front o2s. Are the o2s the only thing that could really get messed with the little bit of driving I'll be doing? (45 miles most)

Anyone on here drive around with open headers for a good amount of time?

Runs like crap because you wont have back pressure.

yes, it does sound like crap with stock cam. Why couldn't this happen a month later when i have my cam! haha. I was surprised with the difference of the back pressure between open headers and having my y pipe on.

Just unplug your O2 sensors if you have to drive with open headers. The PCM will revert to a table for A/F ratios if no O2s are plugged in. It's just like running closed circuit with cold O2s. I drove 200 miles once with no O2s and I lost about 3mpg. If you leave your front O2s plugged in, then the outside air will dilute the exhaust and your PCM will read running lean and up the fuel to rediculous levels.

Thanks for the advice monkey fuerte. I have noticed I am using a lot of gas. I'll probably go ahead and get new o2s since I still have a warranty on the ones that I'm using right now.

I would do that, but the transmission shifts really hard when the maf is unplugged. I just wouldn't think that would be good for it.

From what i've read up on is the headers will still be hot enough that the valves won't get any cool air until they are also cool. I've known people who have ran open headers for a week straight and not have a problem. I wouldn't think my valves would get messed up from driving for 2 days with open headers. I drove to one place today, then going straight to my buddy's place tomorrow to weld them on this time.

Don't you actually have to tune your car to keep it in open loop and cancel the o2 readings? I know my buddy john tuned his car to run open loop all the time on his 98 z28
