newb question on thermostat/housing
He wasn't referring to one of the 6 bolts that mount the pump, he was referring to one of the case bolts on top of the DS of the pump. SJS is right, this is EXACTLY why I swapped my LS1 pump for an LS2 pump yesterday
I test fitted a newer style t-sat (2 peice) with the original LS1 style pump, it will not fit right, the end of the t-stat hits the inner rim of the water pump. So you need to match the t-stat with the right pump. Pep boys sells the LS1 style pump which is a Bosch one. And also do not get a new o -ring gasket from advance auto, its to small.

it wasn't directly addressed in this thread, but the ls1 thermostat will fit in an ls2 pump, just not the other way around. My ls2 pump showed up with a gasket for either an ls1 or ls2 style thermostat. In case anyone wonders...
