Default newb question on thermostat/housing

Are there different styles of thermostats for LS cars? The reason I ask is because when the thermostat/housing was removed from my LS1, it didn't come out as one piece, it came out in two...

I was under the impression that the thermostat/housing was all one piece. I found this pic and now I'm confused.

Went and got a thermostat for a 98 Camaro Z28 from OReillys and it does NOT fit my water pump housing.

Thanks for any help/advice.

You must have a newer water pump on your car with the different style 2 piece thermostat and housing. (They're shown in the bottom left corner of the picture you posted.)

Just return the one you purchased from O-Reilly's and find one from Scoggin Dickey that will fit your application. Thats what I did, when I ran into the same problem with the SLP unit I attempted to install. Here is a link to what you need.

Old thread but this is relevant to my question. I have a 2000 trans am with the older style water pump. Can I swap the one piece thermostat/housing for the newer style one with the separate housing and thermostat? This would make flushing the coolant a lot easier if I could just remove the thermostat and install the housing without it.

Iam not positive but I think the bolt pattern at the housing is different. Easiest way to check would be go to the parts store ask for both parts and compare. If I am wrong some one chime in and let me know.

Such a shame if they can't swap. Otherwise I could run the newer setup and remove the thermostat to flush the cooling system. That way I get much more flow and wouldn't have to wait for the engine to reach temp.

You can take the early style 'stats apart, but it's not as easy as having a two-piece to begin with...

Is there any advantage or difference in the ls2 pumps other than the newer thermostat and housing?

LS2 pump does not have a bolt that interferes with a fast 102 intake

It looks like the newer style should bolt to the older style pump. The older housing has that extra hole, which is just to hold a plastic wire clamp IIRC, which you don't really need. I'm going to replace mine with a new style one the next time I change the fluid, then changing the thermostat will be much easier/cheaper.

I test fitted a newer style t-sat (2 peice) with the original LS1 style pump, it will not fit right, the end of the t-stat hits the inner rim of the water pump. So you need to match the t-stat with the right pump. Pep boys sells the LS1 style pump which is a Bosch one. And also do not get a new o -ring gasket from advance auto, its to small.

If you use the 04/05 GTO LS2 pump you will not have any problem with fitment or any interference with the fast 102 intake.

How do I know...Cause I've been there & done that.
