WHAT??????? There seems to be some miss info on oils. The W means its a winter oil. So a 15W-40 would be a winter rated oil. I am not going into a big discussion on oils it has been Hashed around for 50 years. Here is the basics the broader the spread numbers the less oil and more chemical viscosity modifiers. According to GM and most car companies 10-40 or 5-40 is not the best choice . I run 15-40 all year round. I dont drive my cars in the winter. That is what trucks are for. Always pick an oil with as close as possible to a straight oil. Another words dont think a 10W-50 is an all season oil . Its not. Stay with close spread weights. If you want 10W-30 oil with ZYNC buy you 10W-30 oil from your nearest motorcycle dealer (honda suzuki) Hope this helps. Basically there is very little difference between good oils from reputable manufacturers Of the same VIS weights. TOM
You sounds like you're from the old school, with the thinking that wider viscocity ranges are bad. With conventional oil, a 5W-40 isn't even possible. Thanks to synthetics, its not a problem. You can have your cake and eat it too. Oil is full of additive packages these days, which is one of the reasons its so good. Look at some newer cars from Mercedes and VW, many reccommend a 0W-40 or even somtimes 5W-50.

How does an oil thread turn into a pissing match?
I only read one or two people in this thread say they're running german Castrol. I thought it was the best thing since sliced bread for the LS1. It's what I use, along with ACDelco oil filters.
Anyway, like stated earlier, I believe the frequency of the oil changes is just as important as the oil used. Keep it clean and fresh and you're less likely to run into problems. This is just my personal opinion and since I work on GM's everyday I've seen my fair share of vehicles that get neglected from regular oil changes.

Grifter, a lot of people are scared by the "zero" in Castrol German 0W-30, including my idiot brother, who’s also a long time auto buff.
People are just too lazy to research what the stuff is and the fact that it measures more like a 10W-40. And often too foolish to realize that you’d want a lighter weighted lubricant when the engine is cold.
As far as I’m concerned, there’s German Castrol 0W30 and then there’s all the lesser oils on the market.
In my high milage stock LS1, the common cold start piston slap knock was dramatically reduced when I changed it to GC.

It's at Auto Zone and sometimes Pep Boys.
Often, Auto Zone has sales on Castrol Synthetic with a filter (usually a Fram which you'll toss away...) which includes the made in Germany 0W-30. I think a sale is coming up. This is when I stock up. I like to keep about 24 quarts on the shelf.

Not all synthetics are true synthetics. German castrol is. I have used all types of oil in my ta. Heard of this "German castrol" stuff so I tried it. Autozone is where I get it. Don't use cheap filters either. Fram and the new ac delco's are **** don't use them they have cardboard ends on the filter media caps. One more thing to look for if the oil is GF-5 rated it is junk. Friction modifier content is reduced to save the cat/cats in the car over the engine.
