Default Machining Keyway into pulley

My new crank that i have is keyed. A buddy of mine has an old style asp that does not have a keyway. Could I machine a keyway into it w/o it going out of balance. Or should i machine 2 keyways, the second one being 180 degress from the other other keyway.
