Default Welding tips for slip on merge collectors

I picked up a used set of Edelbrock stepped headers with the slip fit merge collector. I'm looking at these and trying to figure out the best way to weld the primaries to the collectors. How have others done it?

Plan A:
Mark around the primaries where the merge slides up to and put a bead, that way I can get to the middle where the pipes meet. Then slide them on and hopefully get the bead to flow in the middle.

Plan B:
Or should I cut the merge collector in the middle so I can weld the tubes from the inside? Then re-weld the merge.
