Default EGR Bypass Confusion

I bought a used 2001 WS6 which I have read does not have EGR. Previous owner has some kind of home made bypass going on and I'm wandering what it is. Passenger side front of intake has hose going out of it and is t'd with hose coming from rear of engine and up along the valve cover on that side. This jerry-rigged contraption routes through what looks like a pcv valve and then through a filter before dumping down to the ground.

I'll post pix if this is way too confusing but maybe someone can just tell me wtf this sounds like. A Performance shop told me it is a home made egr bypass- but it's a 2001. Ideas anyone?

doesnt sound like an EGR bypass to me, considering 01-02 do not have EGR. sounds like some sort of PCV contraption

Here are the two hoses- intake on right:

And here is all the crap I took off to figure out what the intention was:

Yeah I think the intention was to keep exhaust gases or oil from re-entering the intake? I've seen posts about catch cans and wonder if this was an attempt at a poor man's version? I'm a bit confused still as to the "dirty side" vs the "clean side" as well as why this jerry-rigged setup ends with a hose that just dumps out the bottom of the car.

This is a homemade catch can setup. You need the pcv system and a catch catch it seems(lots of oil)

Agreed on the mechanic in question.

Help me understand how this setup was supposed to work though. The catch can setup is very simple- one tube in, one tube out. I'm not putting this silly puzzle back on the car but when I look at the hoses and t's and couplers and filter (2nd pic above) I don't see the logic as to how it worked in the first place.

Can anyone put the pieces back together in a logical manner?

honestly, it's really not even worth wasting time on. If you want you can do a google search on homemade catch cans and you'll see a bunch of what you pulled out from your car. I thought about trying it once, but it looks god awful and not so practical in the long run.

Just reconnect the pcv lines back into the intake for the meantime, until you get a catch can. Trust me you wont regret it. BTW you should do a search to see other things you can do to improve the pcv system, such as breathers

Yes.

You need the t and the pcv system because the stock stuff is plastic junk. It is critical to the operation and idle of the car unless otherwise tuned out.

I will make you a diagram.

Thanks guys. So until my catch can is in hand, I just hook it up like in Joshiedoom's diagram right? When I get the catch can, then the pcv valve goes into the catch can and then I go out the catch can into the intake.

You are 100 percent correct ! Goodyear fuel line is also emission line btw if the fear of not passing emissions comes up. If anyone has that problem

Wow good link. Only thing I worry about is the fact that it doesnt have baffles and its not pulling from the other valvecover. It would still use a ton of oil

Besides the pcv stuff, did anyone notice that the first pic looks like the throttle body coolant line is missing. Even if that is bypassed, shouldn't it be capped off?

The caps only prevent dust and debris from entering. I have run my uncapped since day 1.. and thats been a lot of miles and a few years.

Joshidoom, what catch can are you using? How much oil do you use between oil changes?

I have the 98 valve covers and use a truck fixed orifice pcv valve system. I have NO oil usage at 169k. Though I would go with a rev extreme or the ws6 store catchcan. You get what you pay for.
