GM engineers put costly time and energy into designing the plate into the car’s design. They designed the stamping to make the plate, the floor boards to mount it to, the fasteners and dedicated the step/time/manhours on the assembly line to install it on the car. GM wouldn’t expend this much effort and cost unless they had a good reason to. Honestly, as weak looking as the original plate is, it still does something to help tie the lower body together.
They must have known the body needed some additional support and reinforcement.
All the aftermarket chassis component companies (UMI, BMR, Spohn) make stronger braces to replace it.
Do you guys think this all these companies would go through all this effort if it wasn’t needed?
I for one will say that as we’re all working towards improving these cars, removing or eliminating this reinforcement plate is a mistake and a step in the wrong direction.
