well if it couldnt jump the chain. what could be the possibility of timing getting off? broken tooth? or maybe previous owner didn't align right?

I went throught the same thing... had a misshift/overrev and I bent 3 pushrods from an old engine with valve float. Found out later that a lifter was trashed in the process... That all led to rod knock and well, a new engine

hope yours isn't as bad, but there's a possibility you hurt more internals than just the pushrod. You just haven't dug into the engine that deep yet to know for sure...
