Default New SS Induction is complete. Video inside..

Hey all, I finished my home made ram air for my SS. I took pictures during the design and installation and when I was finished with my digital camera, but my dog knock my camera off the table and now it won't power on.

Anyway I grabbed my DV camera and shot a quick video to give you the basic over all view of the finished product.

To fill you in I made a system for grabbing air through those holes in the nose of the Camaro. I used 4" aluminum tubing and sheet metal, I wrapped all the tunbing with silver heat relfective tape to seal amy leaks and keep heat out. I put fiberglass mesh screen at each side of the induction inlets down low. The screen is about the same stuff you would find on your screen for your back porch or pool. Its hard to see in the video. Anyway I am still running my MAF screen so having 2 layers of screens should be sufficient to keep out large debris.

Here's the video: New Induction for the SS

If all things work out well I am going to take this design and have the tubing remade with 4" mandrel bent aluminum or I am also thinking about using some 4" tubing and making a fiberglass intake.

This new ram air setup should work well when I install an LSX intake with a 90mm throttle body in the near future.

I'm racing this upcoming weekend and will post results.

Looks nice!! A coulpe of square to rounds (register boots), adjustable 90 degree elbows and some flex pipe. I fabricate those same componets every day at work. Maybe I should make these systems at work.....hmmm, all stainless tig welded nice and shiney, and if need be filters in each end of the square to rounds.....oh why did you get me started!!!!!!!!!

Looks like a good idea, but I think you should incorporate an air cleaner in there somehow.

Yes nice setup. I tried to think up something like that. I thought of y-ing it off and at the end of it putting two cone filters on it at the end of the two pipes. Good luck and post some results.

Looks great ... I am assuming this is a strip only car though?? I really don't think I would run my car around without a filter, considering how dirty mine gets currently. Plus the fact that your intake is low on the car, you are probably going to pull up alot of random dirt/leaves etc from the road and other cars. Also I am seeing that screen mesh you were talking about gettin ripped apart by a rock or something .... I would go with something alittle stronger then that backdoor type mesh and get a filter. (just some constructive idea's for you)

Other then that, the system/car looks great, and I hope it works out good for you. Definately a creative idea and excellent execution.

You should see if K&N or other brand makes a filter the size of the opening of that boot, and if one don't quite fit I have faith in you to fab something up to make it work for daily driving duty.....Good luck man!!!!

Doesn't look like a daily driver too me, heh, running in the 10s is pretty fast. You could easily figure out a way to throw a square filter on that. Even if it was half assed, it would still probably do the trick.

When SAM did experimenting on the LS1 F-body, they found that without the air filter on the car, they only gained ONE horsepower. They decided that it's better to keep the filter in place and use it and find the power elsewhere due to the risk of damage to the engine.

If this car is to be driven on the street, there's alot of **** out there, from rocks to bolts, **** gets fling up in the car in front of you and hits your front fasica, how about a bird stuck in my foglight opening which happened 2 summers ago.

Hey guys! Thanks for the comments. There are no air filters right now, I have a screen covering both intakes at the scoop and am still running the MAF screen. The only thing I would be worried about right now is dirt/dust/smoke getting sucked in. And I don't know how much protection the K&N has against fine dust.

My car is a track only car, 100% race car never driven on the streets. In fact I will have the title to my 02 SS by the end of the month. I plan to cancel my full coverage insurance and registration. I had to have full coverage since I had a loan on the car but the last payment is going out this week.

This new induction is something I've been wanting to try for a while, since I had time off over the holidays I went ahead and built it. I do ALOT of bracket racing and some heads up racing once in a while. I still have my FIPK and will be bringing it with me to the track to test runs with both setups. If things work well for the dual/scoop setup I will keep it for heads up style racing like Thunder Shootout and LS1tech Drag Series.
I've talked with several racers that have claimed to pick ET by making a scoop for air. They have said that removing the ait filer doesn't do anything, but making a scoop with no air filter showed a reward.

I'm not holding my breath that this will gain me a whole tenth. Ya gotta experiment sometimes, blaze your own trail and see what happens =)

if you worried about thermal conductivity try pvc pipe. All Lee used was some light gauge ductwork you find at Home Depot. If you don't like you can use dryer tubing. Hell you can even use cardboard if ya wanted. (I don't recommend plus its kind of ghetto.)

if you end up needing a filter, just put 2 k&n's, the rectangular types from lids, on the inside of the front fiasca, the air will still ram through it, and it will be filtered. sure it might look ghetto haveing 2 filters up there, but it will filter, and it's better than nothing.

looks sweet, hope you find some gains in it.
