Default Any harm in putting mufflers this far back (picture)

Hey guys,

From the sound clips I have come across, and from what I've heard on here about their flow efficiencies, I think the Flo-pro twisters or Moroso spirals are the way I want to go.

The car in the pic is the same kind of car I have.....a 66 Nova. This car also has the same type of rear suspension (TCI 4 link) that I am running. And everyone with these cars and TCI rear suspensions knows that muffler placement is extremely difficult. There's a big crossmember under the rear seat that takes up the space where the muffler usually goes.

Then I found some pics of this guys car, and I think these are in the perfect place...plus they are the same shape as the ones I want to use.

So I got to wondering....

1. Is there any power loss or engine problems that would happen from putting the mufflers this far away from the engine?

2. If the mufflers are placed further back (like this one), does that require a larger size pipe to be run? (Putting them this far back would allow me to easily run 3")

Thanks

My question: why run mufflers at all? No harm at all with that setup.

No problem at all. My Hooker Aerochambers are right at the rear bumper also.

totally fine...

think of the exhaust system as a whole. its going to be just as restrictive or not no matter the placement of the mufflers. now the x pipe on the other hand would have a different effect depending on where it was placed.

if you look at most modern cars, thats typically where the mufflers are placed. and like i said, it makes no difference where the mufflers are, its going to flow the same wether they are right up after the headers with a full exhaust behind them, or if they are at the end of that same full exhaust.

From what research I've gathered on the idea, the farther away from the exhaust valve you get, the more the gases cool. Meaning less volume because of the contraction of cooled molecules. It should flow better than any location forward.

Do you need restriction? When have spiral flows been good performers?

My apologies to the OP, skimmed through your original post the first time and didn't realize the pics weren't of your car. Nonetheless though if your builds going in that direction, it's still a sweet ride!

Its a compromise of sound/flow/fitment. The car isn't going to be a race rocket. Purely street cruising with the occasional back road run down. The car will get a lot of its time with me and my family in it (trying to raise up my kids as gear-heads LOL)

I don't want it super loud. I love the old school muscle car sound, and from what I've seen from these in videos, they are pretty close. The Chevy II with the TCI 4 link makes it hard to fit mufflers that are "normal" shaped (Flowmaster, etc). So these are the best all around for me.
