Default Installing an underdrive pulley on an a4

Well guys in my infinite wisdom of doing things. I completely forgot that I would need to stop the crank pulley from turning to get the old bolt out. Now I've got the car all jacked up and was wondering what my best option was in short of buying the snap on tool to hold the pulley in place? Is there an access cover on the tranny where I can get to the flywheel other than unbolting the starter? Has anyone had any luck with putting a breaker bar in the pulley and wedging it against one of the accessory brackets? I have lt's and my starter is a bit of a PITA to get out so jw if anyone has done it other ways..

Ok thanks I didnt see an inspection cover under there but it was dark when I looked. Is it towards the middle and rear of the bellhousing or by the starter area?

ya i saw the tool its just that it requires me to remove the starter which is a huge pain with the spaceI have in the garage with jack and all plus the headers on the car. If people have used the inpection cover or weding a bar in between a pulley ill give that a shot first

No access to air tools?

An impact gun will knock it off quick, fast and in a hurry.

or yes you can use a prybar through the pulley spokes...but an impact is easier if you have one or know someone with one

I have one lol but my compressor just took a crap last week so I'm working on rebuilding the pump it blew out the reed valves on the first piston. Partswont be in until next week to fix it. I'll try the other methods and report back

I use a prybar through the spokes if I don't have an impact handy. But taking the starter down is super easy, even with longtubes.

I've been really busy so I havent had a chance to do it the prybar method should work though. One other thing, I kno the instructions say to tighten the old bolt down to 240ft lbs and then use a new bolt torqued to 37ft lbs and then another 140 degree turn. My question is since I'm using the install tool sold here and will be heating the hub of the pulley to 250 degrees to help it slide on will I need to torque it down that much if its already seated? Because as I understand the massive torque is just to seat the hub.

I think the torque is to keep the bolt tightly in place so it doesnt back out at 6,000 RPMs or more.

Well ya but the 250ft lbs initially is with the old bolt to fully seat the pulley and then install a new boolt to 40ft lbs so i was just wondering that if I could seat the pulley fully would the 250ft lbs be necessary

Well guys i ended up getting it installed intsall was pretty smooth just used a pry bar jammed to the flywheel and it worked out ok. Just a brain teaser for you all tho, I've put about 250 miles on the pulley and new shorter belts, im using a 39" belt on the 10% underdrive a/c but when the car is cold I'm getting a squeaking sound from the a/c pulley system I replaced both pulleys on there about a month back but not the tensioner. I got two new ones under warranty and it seems to be quiet now but I did this when the car was hot so idk for sure if it fixed the issue. Any other ideas on what it might be? I'd the if the compressor was bad it would make the noise all the time and not go away, also it doesnt make a diff with the compressor on or off.
