Default Catalytic Converter Install going wrong . . .

I got a 50 state approved direct fit catalytic converter (catco I think)
Bolts up properly to the exhaust manifold
But is not a snug fit to the y-pipe like the stock unit
It is a half inch short from fitting snug into the flange in the y-pipe.
The stock was snug, just needed to be tightened.

Now what?

Just decided to tighten the clamps.
Seems like there are no leaks after a 25 mile ride.

Just I be concerned about having to tighten the 1/4 space to make the flange tight as the stock was snug without any free space before tightening

I had to tighten it a lot to get the pipe to pull up to the cat, and don't want extra pull on the cat bolts or manifold or engine, basically where is the slack taken up from?

man...don't worry about it if it's not leaking and the exhaust hangers have enough play in them for expansion. you should be fine.

Noise.
If your looking for a leak on the header sometimes carbon will build up on the outside of the head right where the leak is.

Usually you'll hear a tick or a sputtering sound. Thoses are common sounds with exhaust leaks..
