Unhappy LS1 Coils

Does anybody have a set of ls1 coils lying around for cheap? i think mine are going out and i have a small budget.

I cant drive the car for more than 30 minutes without it trying to cut out and die on me. I don't know what else it could be??
PLEASE help me out.

It could be many things. Have you changed the fuel filter lately?

Coils are one of the last possible things your problem could be.

Crank sensor, crank sensor harness, MAF, IAC, plugs, wires, grounds, harness, coil harness....the list is a mile long

Coils of any kind RARELY go bad, the chance of you losing 4 or 8 is like hitting the lottery 4-8 times in a day. Have the car scanned for codes for starters. My bet is on the crank sensor or crank sensor wire touching exhaust or something like that.

just changed the plugs and wires...I had it scanned for codes...only codes that came up were the rear o2's. where is the crank sensor wire located? it looks like all wires are clear from headers...bit maybe I'm not looking clear enough?

It's behind the starter in the block. If the wire is just shorting it won't throw a code. It's in the perfect place to rub the header tubes though. The plug could also be coming loose. I ziptie mine to the sensor so it can't because it's happened before.

You just said it dies, how is the car behaving when it goes out. Does the tach jump around and act stupid? Does it cough and chug? Does it just kill like you hit the key? Does the car run hard otherwise? Does it die coming to stops, driving, turning? Is it backfiring?

What mods do you have? Is it cammed? Is it tuned (not a programmer...a real tune)?

Find a mechanic with a scanner or someone with HPtuners or EFI live. Watch readings from MAF, MAP, cam sensor, injector pulses, fuel trims, o2 sensors, timing, etc for anything funny. If they have EFI live or hp tuners do a log and capture the sensor readings and post the log file here.

If you think it's the coils, borrow a set first. Even 4.8/5.3/6.0 truck coils should be able to be used for a test.

it'll cough and chug then backfire then ill eventually kill it before it can die completely, if it hasn't already.
Ill just be driving and it seems like it'll "skip a beat" then starts cutting out.

no tune mods are simple, slp lid,k&n air filter, headers, and true dual x-pipe.
ill see if I can find a mechanic that can do that for me.

Have you checked all your grounds behind the heads?

Did you do anything right before it started? While coils are unlikely, damage to the coil wiring harness on the mounting rails is possible. I had a bad harness on my first set of coils...

See if you can monitor misfires to see which bank is backfiring, that should help narrow it down.

Cracked insulation on spark plugs and/or bad plug wires.

Check them anyway, one could have cracked during installation, one of the new plug wires could also be bad right out of the box

Either of those is more likely than coil damage

New parts are not always good...as much junk comes from over seas now most of it isn't. Wanna guess how many bearings I had to inspect when I rebuilt my rear before I found a NEW one that wasn't rougher than the one I was replacing?
