Default Magnaflow Question

How much of a differance would it make in sound and performance if I just installed a Magnaflow muffler rather that buying the entire Magnaflow cat back?

If you aren't planning any other mods, nothing worth worrying about. But if you are ever going to go all-out with a cam or something, that's just another few horsepower that could add-up to a lot.

Very marginally. I would recommend getting the whole catback, but if you aren't planning any other mods, the muffler would give you a much better sound over stock.

I can get the muffler installed for $160.00. I just need to decide if the catback is worth the extra.

As far as sound, it'll most likey sound the same. As far as flow, thats different depending on what setup your car currently has.

Get the catback and forget about the y-pipe. Y-pipes for the stock manifolds are a waste of money. Get a offroad y later on if you decide to get headers.

If all you want is sound, have a flowmaster replace the stock muffler. Cheap and great sound

Trust me, I did a muffler swap (used a Spintech), and ended up regretting not getting a full catback. The catbacks come with full 3" I-pipe and over axle pipes. This helps in terms of flow. The stocker's 2 3/4".

(I later switched to true duals.)

I have just the Magnaflow muffler and am happy with it. Really, your gaining a 1/4 of an inch...will it help flow? Yes. Will it help a lot of flow? NO. The Magnaflow muffler flows better than most cat-backs anyways. I just got the muffler becuase I am not planning on making the car incredible quick...and if I do decide to make it really fast with a cam and heads etc...I'll just stick in a pair of cutouts in my y pipe. I think you will enjoy just the muffler. I really do.

Well, I had the Magnaflow put on. It sounds pretty good, but almost all of the sound is coming from the right tail pipe. Is this normal? Just doesn’t seem right….

Ummm....mine seems to come out of both sides? Did you get the muffler or the whole catback? Either way its a nice system... This is just a guess, but I'd bet you just need to let the muffler burn out...the sound will get a little better and come out of both sides in a few weeks at most....if your still only hearing it out of our right side, you might want to check into replacing it. Fill out the warranty card!!
Good luck, I hope you enjoy it.

Same here- I bought just the muffler (~$100). My car was brand new and I didn't see the sense in ripping out a perfectly good I pipe. So I bought the muffler and new tips. The performance difference was noticeable, not to mention the sound. However, if my exhaust system had had some significant miles on it, I would have done the whole catback.

I did the magnaflow muffler only ($125 installed) and it was a huge difference in sound on my stock 02 TA.
