Default Are 4.10 gears normally loud?

I have a 2002 camaro ss and i have 4.10 gears in it and they wine. I heard that 4.10 gears do that alot. I just wanted to know if they actually in fact do natually wine? Or would they possibly be wearing out or installed wrong?

What brand? Who installed them? Did you get new bearings? Were they broke in properly? Normally if they whine bad, it could be error in the install or a bad gear set. The majority of 4.10's, 3.73's will have a tad bit of whine, but nothing major.

I just had a 10-bolt car with 4.10s and they were dead quiet. Lat week I had a 12 bolt car with 4.10s and the owner said that it whined since new.

I have them...a set of AAM 4.10s that were professionally installed. They whine ever-so-slightly.

How bad is the whine? My GM 4.10's have just a faint bit of whine on acceleration from about 45-65MPH then it goes away. Had them installed by one of the best installers in Oregon, upgraded the bearings and had a custom seal kit done, did the proper break-in procedure as well. I'm running synthetic fluid along with the GM additive. Do you know what brand they are and if they were installed by someone that knows what they were doing? Were they broke-In properly? Also from my experience having ran multiple gear ratio's, I have noticed the sum of them will have a little bit of noise. The majority of my local friends running 3.73's, 3.90's and 4,10's all have a bit of whine.

EDIT: I'm big on running only GM brand gears. I have found they seem to be the quietest. Others may disagree.

+1 on the gm gears. Have had not so good luck with motives. Although during the time I ran the motives they were made overseas (China). Now they are made in Italy.

Not sure if they were broken in right and i don't know who installed them they were in the car when i bought it. Im going to drop the rear end and open the housing and look at them. Im hoping they aren't worn out and i can fix it.

Guys, it's all in the install. I run Motive 4.88s in my Silverado and they are DEAD silent at all speeds, during acceleration and deceleration. I've had them in for about 20k or so.

Yes, this plays the major factor but it's not the only thing that would keep the gears from whining. There are bad gears out there weather they be gm, motives etc etc. He might have a bad set which will whine even if they were installed perfectly. Plus your Silverado weighs a ton and you probably wouldn't hear them if they did whine a little

Most after-market gears have a more aggressive cut on the gear teeth. This makes them naturally more noisy, but stronger. Stock gears have softer angles, creating quieter and slightly weaker gears. It is not impossible to get aftermarket gears to be just about dead quiet.

I don't remember them being so noisy when i first bought the car. Unless i thought it was apart of the car until the day my friend pointed it out. Since that day its like it keeps getting louder and louder. Unless im just freakinf out about and stressing over something that is somewhat natual.

I had Richmond Gears correctly installed and setup by a experianced tech. They whined, almost badly. Within two weeks, I swapped them out to GM gears (AAM) from Jaws Gear. All quiet out back now. Very happy.

As correctly pointed out by 01SS, aftermarket "performance" gears are stronger due to their cut but often make more noise.

Unless you're producing serious power, GM gears should be all the gear you'll ever need.

Hi,
how did your mesh pattern look on the ring and pinion. The backlash setting is also important for the aforementioned issues. The break in period should help after a few heat cycles. I would also check my axle bearings as rear noise can fool the best........have a blessed day........jim
