Default thermostat comparison - pics

Guys, I am doing a little thermostat research here. Below are photos of two LS1 thermostats, one from my 2002, one from a buddies 1998. I'm wondering what years each style was used, and if there is a third or fourth or..... style. I would appreciate it greatly if those of you who have replaced your thermostat would take a look at the factory one and let me know which one you had, and what year your car was.

2002 model

They look different but I’m sure they do the samething...

The 02 has another spring and the part at the end that opens seems to shaped different.

How do you want to compare the two? Open temp? They may look different but still function the same

i will also take a look at my 98 stock and see what it looks like... i just found it a few days ago

My 98 was a 180* stat from the factory, and my 2000 was a 195*. My buddy's 02 is a 195. Either they changed them in 99 or in 00.

That could be the case... if it is; gm did it to lower emissions on ls1? My mothers 02 SS seems to run hotter then my 98 stock… but the temp gage in the 98 are different to?

Again I will take a look at mine tonight, don’t they stamp the open temp on the bottom? I have seen a few stock ones like this but never did look at my ls1

I know they do the same thing, they both open at 186 (stamped on the bottom of the stat element). I am just trying to understand when they changed them.

If you guys that have changed yours could take a look at them and let me know what year car and what style, that would answer the mystery. I think I have an interesting idea regarding mods to the thermostat, but I'm trying to understand how many different styles there are and what years they came in right now.

Thanks again for the help !

I have seen both of those t-stats. I had the older version on my '00 Silverado and the newer version on my '03 SS. They both opened at the same temperature (185), but the new one did not work with the BB mod. I use my old stat with the BB mod now.
I have also heard that GM changed the sensitivity/accuracy of the coolant temp gauges in the dash some time around '00. Too many customer concerns about the temperature variation on the gauge. I know mine is not accurate. When my engine is fully warmed up it runs about 180*F. This reads halfway between 160 and 210 on the dash (175). But, when its cold weather, my engine will run at 160*F. This reads half a tick below the 175 mark (about 170-172) when EFILive tells me its really 160.
