Default Alternator disassembly

How do you do it? I did a quick search on here and turned up with nothing. I want to paint the housing.

I realized that I wouldn't be able to separate the two half-shells on my own, so I went down to the local automotive electrical outlet nearby and walked in with the alternator. After explaining what I needed to do, the good guy at the counter took the alt into the back room, then came out with it separated. "How much do I owe you", I asked.
He replied, "no charge".
Don't forget to act a bit helpless while explaining your predicament.
Needless to say, I will buy my stuff at that locale.

It has 4 of them I know that. I took those out. There has to be something else to it.

You might be able to separate the halves with an extra pair of hands and a few screwdrivers...one screwdriver blade at each quarter.
Place the lower half in a vise, then each screwdriver blade pry at the same time. Unless it comes out evenly, all around, it isn't coming out.

Mine was completely enclosed (98 LS1) and the stator was not accessable from the outside.

I'm wondering if running a propane torch around the perimeter of the half with the outer metal circumference might help you to pop it loose...just like a jar lid. That is if you have the same alt as mine.

It appears that the pulley must be removed in order for it to separate. Can anyone confirm or deny that? It's a 98 alternator
