Default High mileage LS1 questions...

I have 143,xxx miles on my car. I have a few issues. One, I seem to be losing coolant somewhere. I fear its a head gasket but the car does not run poorly. The oil is not unusual in color or anything. It doesn't leave puddles either though.

Second, my power steering fluid has recently become contaminated. It doesn't seem to leak unless the car is running. I let it idle for about 5 minutes after a short spirited drive and it left a puddle about the size of credit card in my driveway. I'm thinking a new cap for the reservoir is needed.

Third, my car is still running the stock timing set, oil pump, and water pump. For the timing I understand the LS2 set is a direct replacement. Am I correct in that thought, or is there more I need? I was also looking for some suggestions on the oil pump replacements and testimonials. For the water pump, I was thinking a Meziere ewp 55gpm unit. I figure it would likely outlast this engine and move to whatever gets put into this car when the time comes. Any ideas, suggestions I would like to hear them. I'm thinking about putting tracer dye into the coolant and doing a compression test on the engine to see if its worth the time to install this stuff and the money involved.

swap a new ls1 into it. can buy a motor for 1200-1500 with 50k-60k on it. and call it a day.

For that amount of work I was thinking bigger but not a iron block...
But the thought has crossed my mind more than once.

See what kind of numbers you get on the compression test before giving up on this motor.
