Default Ebay head studs are complete garbage

I thought I would try some Ebay ls1 head studs from 1bad71camaro on ebay. Well at 65 ft lbs it snapped, leaving only the threaded nub in the bottom of the block.
I contacted the seller, he offered to send another stud, to which I said I would like to get a refund because if it happened again it may be impossible to retrieve the broken stud. The reply was that the torque spec was 140 in lb and that I was a genius for torquing them to 65 ft lbs. I tried to speak with them on the phone, but they were the rudest people I have ever spoken with. Never buy them

Were you torquing the stud into the block or the nut onto the stud?

140inlbs would be something you put on the stud, not the nut, albeit most stud kits dont get a torque. Just finger tight then back off some

Need more info for this story

Not to be a dick, but why would you buy some off brand set of head studs. Why would you not buy ARPs. For something that is as important as head studs are, why skimp and get the cheapest set you can find.

Which size stud did you break? The really small top ones, or one of the bigger studs? The 140 in-lb spec makes sense for the smaller studs, but you probably already knew that they didn't get torqued as much as the bigger ones. If you broke one of the bigger ones, then it was probably a defect, and honestly not surprising considering the number of **** fasteners available out there.

I broke the large ones around the cylinder bore, it snapped on the third torque spec, after torquing the studs in place at 8 ft lbs. Yes this did snap at the third torque cycle (22 ft lbs 44 ft lbs 65 ft lbs) And to answer the other question about why I tried them, they stated that they were the same tensile strenght as the ARP ones, but obviously at a fraction of the price.

I bought a set of ARP ones today, and had no problems with them at all. With fasteners you certainly get what you pay for, I was extremely fortunate that I was able to retrieve the broken stud out of the block, or this would have been pretty costly.

^ Hmmm.. Good deal then.. Yeah, the lowest I will go with head bolts is GM. I'm running ARP, so I won't need new ones till I get a different engine/car.

I am sorry they broke. May it be a learning lesson for you and all of us.

Some things you just shouldn't cheap out on.

There is a reason they cost less.

Can't say I'm surprised. That is one item I would not want to cheap out on.
