Default Bigger Lid + MAF worth it on H/C/I LS1 ?

My current mods are

Long tube headers, ORY, magnaflow cat back
227/233 custom cam
UD pulley
MTI Lid with stock MAF
Stock LS1 intake manifold

My car is going back to the shop in early May for TFS 215 heads and FAST 92/92 setup.

I'm still undecided on whether I want to go MAF or Speed Density for tuning. The car is not a daily driver but I do like to drive it a lot. I want something I can drive whether its 30 degrees outside or 100+ degrees out side.

My question is, on my new setup listed above, will a bigger Lid + 85mm MAF even be worth it ? How much power would a 98mm Lid + 85mm MAF get me on a H/C/I LS1 ? Or should I just say screw the MAF and go speed density ?

Any input is appreciated.

I gained roughly 5rwh with a 98mm lid and 85mm MAF on my cam only, stock 241's and LS6 intake. I would stay away from the SD tune. More trouble then it's worth.

Yeah the speed density tunes are a bitch to keep spot on. You will have to re-tune it or double check it all the time to make sure it's spot on. You will definetly see gains with a bigger lid and maf.

This is the kind of information I wanted to hear. If I can gain 5whp or a little more with the bigger MAF + Lid I will probably do it. Then I will purchase a chris 1313 ram air and hopefully see some decent gains.

Who makes a decent 85mm Maf ?

Stick with a factory GM unit. I believe Pat G picked up 12hp on a head/cam fast setup back in the day

GM 85mm. I got mine on sale with the pigtail from Scoggin Dickey for a good price.

Will this benefit a SI car at all?

I want to replace my lid and I am considering going with the FT 98MM lid.

IMO, keep it simple with a MAF. Get a GM 85mm right before your dyno tune for all the mods... This is the reason when I got my car I made sure I bought the FTP 98mm lid for room to grow..

do you mean is the intake snout even with the 85mm tb yes, we went as far as where the gasket goes, i had to make my own gasket, i purchase a sheet if rubber/plastic gasket (whatever oem material is made out of) from my local empire hardware store and cut it out by tracing my summit tb spacer. i dont use the tb spacer any more, the spacer would act like a funnel, on side was 85mm, the other was 78mm for a smooth transition. i hated it to so we opened up the ls6 snout

Stick with the GM 85mm MAF that came of the Vettes. I got mine from Ebay back in 2007 for like $35 shipped... And just an FYI the SLP 85mm MAF is a GM maf with an SLP sticker on it

I hope you also plan on upgrading your fuel injectors as well? I bet you're almost maxed right now..

went with a sd tune running 4 inches all the way to the throttle body off a 4in lid . worth a few ponies . the intake manifold is really the only restriction past a maf . even with 300+cfm heads a stock fast does 270 roughly .

Yeah my stock injectors are pretty much maxed. I was thinking of going with this MAF

I'll see if I can find one cheaper though.

Well I have a ported 92mm with my setup so hopefully that won't be to much of an issue.

get the 85mm vet delphi maf for 35shipped from ebay and buy the harness adapter for 40 from casper, thats what i did, and its essentially the same but cheaper
your tuner can change the parameters in the ecu to accept it

I recommend to go with an SD tune. My car gave a number of tuners issues
until one shop determined the 85mm MAF was being maxed out. The car now runs in SD open loop
and runs stronger than ever.

I don't think an SD tune is for me considering I drive in all different temperatures. I'm confident in my tuner and he recommended me to go with a GM corvette 85mm MAF.

I just picked up a 85 MAF and harness. I figured if I am getting the car tuned. I might as well put it on. Going on stock short-block with 228/230 112 lsa cam, PRC 2.5 5.3's, Ported Fast 90/90, 42 injectors, UDP. I am hoping for anything over 425.

Was thinking the same thing.

OP- How does your car drive/idle cam only? I've been looking at similar spec'd cams and setups as you have.

Quick Reply: Bigger Lid + MAF worth it on H/C/I LS1 ?
