Default Want to try and build my own cold/ram air intake.

Its been dyno proven that the Volant and K&N setups make a few more horsepower than the aftermarket lids (not enough to warrant the $200+ in price). So why not build my own! I can get any necessary hose from home depot/pep boys. The box will be built out of some heat resistant plastic (again, home depot). But what about the air filter....so hard to find a filter that I think will fit. I think I may try and use this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aFe-P...#ht_1607wt_897

With it being so wide and only 5 inches long, it should fit right in place of the stock lid. To create the box around it (maybe incorporate a ram air type setup) will be the fun part. What do you guys think? I dont have any access to machines to cut pipe, nor do I want to notch any of the car to fit a filter in front of the radiator. It seems this filter is a close match to the volant filter used on the Camaro/Z28 setup.

Again, this filter:

VS this filter:

My last question, on the 2002 Z28 there seems to be an extra vac line or breather hose, what is this? I can see it is taken into account on the side of the volant. What should I do with it, on a custom setup?

I made so many different setups for the gtp as well! Those were cake with some smooth tubing and a giant conefilter. I want to make the same power as a volant for 1/3 the price.

^^^ I hear ya. When I did my GTP I spent may $35 dollars. The filter took up most of that money. Sure beats K&N price of $220. May not look as good but it gets the job done
