Flowmaster or Other?
Flowmaster or Other? I'm trying to get the exhaust squared away before I put a cam in this summer. I currently have Tsp headers and their 3" ory flowing into a flowmaster catback that came with the car when I bought it. I have done a lot of reading on this forum and many people say that the flowmaster catback does not flow very well on these cars. With that being said I would like some suggestions on what would be a cost effective option to go with. I like the sound of the headers through the flowmaster, but I want to have all the power I can get when I do the cam install. LS6 heads will come later. The tsp rumbler sounds good and is priced reasonable enough. Does it flow better than the flowmaster? An electric cutout would not be a bad idea either.

Some guy on here has a nice Pewter SS, and in his sig he put down like 408 HP with the cutout open and then like 399 with it closed, through a flowmaster catback...I wonder if it is a mufflex style or the american thunder type catback.....

It's one of the best sounding for our cars imao, but not the best flowing.
A few hp for sound quality...that's up to you...
You risk just not liking the sound/tone of a new catback which in turn can cost you more$ to get it right....but...you'll get that few extra hp...
So either way....If you have the money why not?? you can alway's put the flowmaster back on

If you like the way the FM sounds, then just put an electric cut-out in the I-pipe. 
FYI the sound is going to change some, and it'll be louder, so go w/E-cut-out,or pull the FM muffler and tail pipes and put in a magnaflow bullet w/turndown.

edit: a friend of mine had the texas speed rumbler catback on his cammed camaro. sounded great at idle, but anything above that was nothing but rasp.

this. no full exhaust setup is going to make more power than a cutout. dumped true duals might come close, but i seriously doubt they would eclipse a properly placed cutout.
edit: a friend of mine had the texas speed rumbler catback on his cammed camaro. sounded great at idle, but anything above that was nothing but rasp.

I had mine dynoed with and without the flowmaster catback. It dynoed 8hp 9tq more thru the cutout. I just switched to a mufflex catback with the magnaflow muffler, sounds awesome. Im not even putting the cutout back on it.
A cutout sounds like a great idea but Im just think that once I order all the parts and get it welded on at a muffler shop its going to end up costing the same as a rumbler catback. Does the rumbler bolt right up to the tsp y-pipe? Is it something I could do myself in the driveway without having to go to a muffler shop?

Definitely finish your FULL exhaust first. Do your motor mounts while the manifolds are out.

I've heard they don't flow as well as a straight through muffler, but they are the best (next to the 10 series) flowing muffler Flowmaster makes. And well, I just have to reiterate that the sound is awesome.
