Default 2001 SS. 425 HP goal...help.

Hello, everyone. I am hoping I can have some help from members who have a similar goal as me, or accomplished what I am trying to do. First off, here is what I have...

2001 SS A4 343 rwhp, 353 tq

-SLP underdrive pulley
-160 degree thermostat
-373 gears
-K and N cold air intake
-Ported throttle body
-American Racing Long Tube Headers, high flow cats w/ Magnaflow cat backs.

My goal is to achieve 425 rwhp with more down low and midrange than up top. I eventually will take my car to the track and will probably a couple times a year eventually. The focus is set up for weekend driving and streetability. I dont want the car sounding like a tractor pull vehicle with a wild cam, but I am certainly not opposed to some minor lope. If anything, I wouldn't mind a cam that is on the quiet side for sleeper effect if that's even possible. I really am interested in the 215cc cnc'd trick flow heads, and probably a custom cam that matches the heads for the goal I have. I know a stall will be needed, so wondering what range you all thought?

If anyone has an a4 ss or z28 and has a similar modded car that I would like to build please let me know what you have and if you like your build. I want to stay naturally aspirated, and am not interested in NOS, superchargers, or turbos. I know a good tune will be in order , but I dont think 425 is too out of the question with what I would like to achieve. Hope to hear your thoughts.

243 heads, LS6 intake and a 04 Z06 cam should get you there. These are all stock GM items that can be had for cheap. This is what came on the Vette that advertised 405 HP, add your headers and lid you should be there.

The Vette had 405 crank HP. Maybe 370 WHP. You will need more than a lid and headers to get up to 425WHP.

ya a full bolt on ls6 car is around 400 with an m6 and 380ish with an auto. 425 whp would not be a problem with trick flows honestly you could do afr 210's or trickflows and then add a small cam (high 220's duration) and you would meet if not exceed your goal. If you wanted to keep it on the cheap side a set of 243's and a decent sized cam would meet your goals

So basically, your saying if I add an 04 z06 cam, I will gain 80 rwhp?

No, you won't. I recommend getting some ported 243's, and an EPS cam. Even a mild EPS cam with those heads will get you where you want to be.

I think the TFS 215s, TFS 220 as cast or Ported 243's and a mild cam will get where you want to be.

Maybe Futral F-11 or F-13
Texas Speed 228/228 Cam
EPS 226/230 or 226/234 or 230/234

However, please do not forget to get a new higher stall torque converter. Heads and cam w/out new converter is all for nothing. So save cash back for that too.

Seems like people get too caught up on dyno numbers...why? Bragging rights?

Run the car at the track, go grab your 13 second timeslip then install a 3500-4000 stall converter and run low 12s, you'll be happy. Forget the dyno numbers, only way without a mid sized cam is nitrous or forced induction.

So do you think the cam specs others have been recommending are not going to achieve 425rwhp?

425 is a lot to put down, especially through an AUTO (with your given restrictions above).

Why that number? Why not a track time goal?

Here is how I see it, lets say car 1 and car 2 race with the following mods:

Car 2: 425 RWHP through a cam/heads/bolt ons setup

Car 1: Drag slicks/radials, some suspension work, and a nice 3800 stall.

From a stoplight, I would take car 1 every day of the week, it would annihilate the bolt on/cammed car without tires or a stall.

Now yes, Car 2 would probably win from a 60 roll, but you said yourself, you want low/mid range power. That would mean a stall, gears, suspension, and nice sticky tires.

Just my opinion.

You can contact any vendors on here and let them know you want 425RWHP and they can throw a nice setup together for you, but unless you are doing 60, 80, 100MPH roll races I would get the fun mods first. besides, 100MPH+ roll racing is better suited for a turbo setup (which is the opposite of what you want) as the turbo spools and makes HUGE mid-top end power.

Engine Power Systems. Patrick G is the man when it comes to cams and he can spec you a custom cam that you can get through EPS.

The OP's car should already have a LS6 intake manifold.

I understand the point you are making. 425 seems like a nice achievable number to obtain that wouldnt over due anything, and still give me a nice ride on the weekends when I cruise around. I didn't mention in my initial post, that I have some nitto's nto5r's sitting in my garage. So when I build up my top end, they along with a stall would be integrated into my car. No matter what head and cam combo I go with, a stall and radials will be placed on the car. Maybe I didn't make myself clear earlier. So when looking at your two scenarios above, why settle for just a car that has only a stall and radials when what I want to do to my car would actually include stall, tires, a cam and heads? Wouldn't you want this type of car if you had your choice? The best of both worlds.

Just read an old post about an 2000 ss with stall and a baby eps cam. Made 430 to the wheels and ran mid 11's. Wow. That would save me some money.
