Default Air pump problem??exhaust smell in car??

Hi Everyone,we just purchased GM service manuals for our "99"SS Camaro cant seem to figure the problem out.....

We purchased the car back in feb and have noticed a strong exhaust smell when the car is running. Its the kind of smell that burns your eyes and nose and blows through the vents as well if the heat is on.
I guess it would be the same smell as if you ran the car in a closed garage for a while(thats what you smell in the car though)

we were thinking maybe its the air pump under the drivers side headlight area for a few reasons.... the car has the K&N fipk. We thought there should be an air hose tied into it(or filter)but realised that was not for the "98-99"

It looks like on the air pump there are maybe 2 open hoses going to nothing?

our friend had an 2002 SS and when he would start it you would hear that whining or whistling sound for a minute or 2 and then it would stop. After research on here everyone said that was the air pump.

You do not here that sound with our car.We cant find the routing even in the GM manuals.and my husband would like to fix the problem himself if possible especially since the car isnt on the road.I forgot to mention there is NO check engine lights either.Any help given would be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone!!Jennifer

The air pump is only to get the catalytic converters up to temperature quicker on cold starts, so at the most if the air pump isn't working you would have the exhaust stink a little longer on cold starts, that's it.
If it continuously has that smell, it probably just has an exhaust leak(at heads/manifolds or where y-pipe connects to the manifolds), and because of the exhaust leak its running rich.

Here's what you're looking for:

FYI, the T-fitting (#2) is where the hose from the air pump connects.

To be honest,we are not sure if the smell will go away or not just because we havent had a chance to run it long other than moving it in the lawn.the exhaust appears ok,with no check engine light, but does appear to have some black soot or something if its revved a little. We just figured it because the miles on it(98k...we are going to change the motor eventually)In the diagram I know all those hoses are connected. Is number 2 the long one that runs parallel with the drivers side fender down to the air pump?If so I think that ones connected. Is that the only rubber hose connected to it?It looks like I think 2 other hoses a few inches long that come off the air pump that arent connected to anything?

Yes it is, and that's the only hose I'm aware of that connects to the air pump.

What's this air pump stuff? Sounds like unnecessary weight to be removed.

I forgot to ask,but doesnt the hose for the "00-02" that goes to to the air box lid go to the air pump?We were kind of wondering how it was set up for the 98-99?

Yeah it draws fresh air from the air lid.

Here's the 2000-02 air assembly:

And for the 1998-99:

Thats exactly what we were looking for!Couldnt find it anywhere. From what my husband remembers, after looking at the diagram he thinks ours is all connected.I guess its time for him to start looking at the exhaust. He just wanted to get it all fixed before we put it on the road and put our 2 little boys in it.Thanks again for the help!
