Default Seeking Advice on what Y-pipe/headers to purchase.

Hello guys,

I recently decided i'm going to go ahead and purchase a set of coated Pacesetter longtubes but as far as the Y-pipe goes i'm still undecided. The cheap option would be to go with an Off-Road-Y-pipe but I hear this is illegal. If I wanted a Catted Y-pipe how much more am I likely to spend? The reason I ask is because this IS a Daily Driver and I don't need another obvious excuse to be pulled over.

Also I was told the Y-pipe should be a 3inch, would so would verify that?

I am trying to get a ball park price without installation costs

Thanks for your help!

Chase

www.ws6store.com <- Excellent vendor, give them a call.

Unless you are pushing 450+ RWHP, a 2.5 " Y pipe will suffice. The restriction is stuffing all that exhaust into a single 3" pipe.

Ok so I checked out ws6store and they had quite a few options, but I found headers that had the ceramic coating for about 400 but I couldnt find the 2.5 y-pipe sold seperately.. I found some combo sales that included both y pipe and a set of headers for around 900-1k+ is that assuming that a Catted y-pipe is going to cost me around 400 dollars?

This is looking to be more expensive than i thought it was going to be.

texas speed has great deals all so. there Ypipe has the good merge also for your choice of 1 3/4s or 1 7/8s dependending on your future mods. Id personally go 1 7/8s with a good a ypipe

it breaks down to this if your state has emmisons laws and does inspections, then yes you will need cats and shorty headers, as these are the only things allowed in emmison lawed states. if you roll up in there and you have an ORY and long tube headers you will fail inspection and they will require you to return in a week or so with stock exhaust manifolds and catted y pipe or shorty headers and catted y pipe. thank god i live in flordia where i can run long tubes and open headers and no one cares

Depends. Does Texas have inspections? here in Neb. we have none. And as far as your concerns about being pulled over, I think it's no different than if you have cats. If you're flooring it in front of a cop, they'll notice. Just cruising, even at high RPMs, I doubt they'll take notice. I went ORY and figured I could just add cats later if a problem ever came up. hasn't happened yet.

I've been in Texas for over 13 years and have never ever had an emissions test, just safety inspection. I'm doing ORY without a doubt. I think only certain counties have emissions. Houston is the only place I am 90% certain has it.

But the Catted Y-pipe doesnt hinder performance that much does it? If its a little extra dough im dishing out to avoid the hassle of finding someone who won't emission test me i can do that.

The hi-flo cats will only cost you 3-5hp and there about $100. I would never go without cat as I can't stand the smell. Also, cats tend to get rid of a lot of rasp associated with headers and hi-flo cat-backs.

Yeah, they sell a solid setup for the money. Why not just buy there headers too? Is there a big price difference between the TSP and PS? I don't know much about PS but TSP's are 304 stainless steel. Do yourself a favor and get 1 7/8 headers the first time. Buying parts twice blows.

OP I don't mean to highjack your thread but I've also been shopping around for headers and Y pipe combo.

Pretty fixed on Kooks or ARH's but since my car won't be raced much why do some say go with 1 7/8 instead of 1 3/4. Wouldn't you lose some low end torque and back pressure going with 1 7/8 on a street car that has just a few bolt on mods?

To avoid the potential hassle of the smog gods it's best to always go with cats. Here in CA. I know a few smog shops that could care less if you have headers so long as you have cats and the car blows clean under the sniffer.

Not much to gain going without cats except for the acrid odor / smell from not having them. Todays performance cars all make solid horsepower with them.

Well looks like the best route to go is get the TSP 3" catted Y-Pipe with the TSP Stainless Headers 1 7/8... thats around 900 dollars without even installing them.... Any chance Texas speed installs for free? lol

Seems like im dishing $900+ for about 20 hp.

Considering my car only has a lid and a cutout, am I even going to feel a difference with this being added?

In the dyno TSP posted switching to 1 7/8 they only lost 1hp below 4k rpms if I remember correctly. Then gained about 10hp across the curve...this was on a car with only a FAST intake.

I'd think you'd gain a good 30rwhp...but no your not going to feel any real difference. Only thing I really felt a difference on was after I did H/C...but that was about 100hp. Your car will definitely sound good though.

Installing headers and exhaust is easy if your the least bit mechanically inclined. You can get the whole thing installed in a day by yourself. I know the TSP headers don't slip on the drivers side to easy though. I think you have to remove something in order for that side to drop in.

Don't forget after headers your going to be running rich, so to maximize the bolt-on you need a tune. It's not absolutely necessary...I went years before I had mine tuned, but just something else to think about.
