Question FIPK to Lid worth the effort and $$ ??

In case you don't know what's going on let me fill you in.

When I bought my 02 Z28 in 11/03/03 it already had several mods done to it.
One of them is that it had the K&N FIPK already installed. At first I thought this was cool as hell and great because I was going to do that anyways. But now that I've found this board I've done a lot of reading and it seems to me that 95% or more of LS1 owners here are running a lid instead of a FIPK.

That got me thinking that I should switch over since I didn't spend any money on the FIPK. I found a setup from Fast toys that has everything I need including a lid for $320 or so.

My question is this. Does a Lid setup perform better than the FIPK and is that why everyone is running them?? Or is it simply a money thing since the FIPK costs more than basically every lid I've ever looked at.

I don't have money to burn which is why I'm here trying to gather more advice on how to spend my hard earned money. That $$ could go to get me a Rumbler cat back to replace my Corsa (That was also on the car, nice exhaust just a little too much on the tame side for me )

Thanks in advance for help and advice.

I haven't got a lid, but I do have a K&N FIPK. All I did to my 98 Z was to add the FIPK and a set of Hooker LTs with an ORY. Man my car really woke up! It was like night and day. Haven't dynoed it or raced it yet but plan to. But I have also got alot of other stuff going on right now. All I know is my car really pulls HARD all the way to 6,000 with stock heads and a cam!

For the $300 FIPK you can buy a lid and FTRA or SSRA, which is what you are considering buying. Most of us already had a lid when the FIPK came out and couldn't see spending $300 on it. Its way overpriced. I would stick with the FIPK if I were you. You might see a gain with the FTRA and a lid over the FIPK, but I doubt its worth $300. You'd probably be better off buying a pulley. As for your exhaust, corsa is a great exhaust, maybe you would like the QTEC cutout to make it a little less tame. You can open it a little or all the way and it will most likely give you a gain over the corsa. Plus its really cool to be cruising along next to someone and open your cutout on the highway

Remember.. you can do a basic lid for $100.. thats why most people run them.

But look at it this way:

Nice Lid = $140
Smooth bellows = $30
small K&N filter for smog hose = $15
Cleaning kit = $15
K&N or Holley filter = $50

Add all that up and your at $250

The K&N FIPK comes with all that for the $300.. so it really isnt THAT much more expensive.

I liked my FIPK and durring dyno testing we always made more HP with it over a lid.. it does have dissavantages (ideling heat sink).. but it did well in autotap tests and besides it looked cool as heck

I like MY FIPK and it seals much better than most lids. FIPK dynos better than FTRA or SSRA because it flows more air. The others become more efficient and flow better as the car moves. That is with a stock hood. However with an SLP or ram air hood the FIPK still beats them all. I will not mention N20 (DRY) (My setup). I wouldn't trade it for anything else.

i love my fipk, main reason is i have a harwood hood and the hood was not fucntional when i got it,they are set up different under the hood than the factroy ws6's hoods. they have like a plastic "box" behind the nostrils. All i did was cut out the nostrils to make them functional and cut out a rectangle in the back of teh box and my fipk sets down right behind it. You can sqat down on your knees and peek through the nostrils of my hood and see the fipk just chillin there and its loud as hell when it gets to sucking. I've had people ask me if i have a turbo because when the air starts moving it creates a whooossh sound. you could really see the filter before i fabbed up some screens for my nostrils, hey diont want to suck a bird up. i could tell quite a difference in power..300 bucks worth ehhh i dont know if id go that far. i didnt have factory ram air. just get a lid, also makes it a hell of alot nicer if you go with a dry shot becasue you dont have to drill through your fipk to mount your hardware.

Keep your FIPK I love mine. I cut a big hole the lenght of the filter in the heat plate that way the free ram air works with it too. The filter does get dirty faster on the bottom with it done like that. And I cut holes in the hood where the hood latch is also. I get a good amout of air in there.

Do like PontiacTA99 said. Cut out the bottom of it. That is what I did and added the FTRA kit on the bottom for more air. I know it is getting good air on the bottom because it gets pretty dirty under there.

I like the FIPK. If I were you I would be proud to be one of the 5% that actually own one. Nothing wrong with that.

But if you really want a lid, I can send you my MTI and you can send me your FIPK. Hell I will call it an even swap!
