Default Removing crank pulley?

How'd you guys do it? I figured I'd ask before I broke something. How'd you hold the pulley still? Is the bolt normal or reverse thread? I had a bar shoved through the pulley and wedged against the block. Will this hurt anything? Thanks.

If you have an M6, put the car in gear to hold the engine still (back wheels on ground or set P. Brake)...for an auto, you have to drop the starter and put a screwdriver or something in there to hold the flexplate. Have 2 people!

The bolt is regular right hand thread. It is 24mm, but I believe a 1" socket works fine (maybe 1 1/16", can't remember). Get a breaker bar on it, and give it hell....it should pop loose, then youll be able to unthread it by hand.

To pull the balancer, thread the bolt in almost all the way, then set up the puller so it pushes against the bolt. Pull on the INSIDE of the balancer...there are 3 pads to hook the tool to. If you pull on the outside, it will probably chip. As you pull, you'll need to back the bolt out as you go...you'll get the idea....

Good luck!

Use a 3 pronged puller to pull of the stock one. Dont pry it off cause you could cause damage to the crank.

Here is a good page with pics that will show you what to do.

Just take the starter down so you can see the flywheel. You should be able to put a screwdriver in there on one of the teeth so it doesnt spin. Have someone hold it while you try to loosen the bolt....

Also, if the car is up in the air and the screwdriver is long enough, you might wanna see if you can slide the screwdriver through the driveshaft where the U-Joint is to keep it from spinning... right behind the yoke that goes into the trans...only an idea :-)

Cody has the right idea I have only had 2 that would not break with an impact. Then you will need to do it the other way, but try and impace and hamer on it for a few seconds most come off real easy. and even if you don't have the flywheel blocked the compresion of the motor will help hold it while you break it loose.
