Default Truck starter question

So I am in the middle of running innovative wiring big 3 and kg3 alternator and figured it'd be a good time to put in the truck starter since id have the starter out. id rather lessen the chance of having my block crack. ordered a new 5.3 truck starter off fleabay for 60 bones. got it wired up, and was in the process of mounting it and i can not get it to fit! Has anyone else had this issue? from my reading I'd assumed it be pretty much basic starter swap but just an improved design. now im heated cuz the damn thing will not align properly
it seems to be hitting on the dust cover maybe? the starters are almost exactly the same from what i can tell (truck has larger opening, gears slightly more visible, mounting block difference.) i will try to post a pic for reference later.

appreciate your thoughts and insight gents

thanks, Jay

Ok so here are a couple pics

Truck starter question-ki3asl.jpg
Starters stock on left truck starter on right. body of the starter is smaller for the truck one.

Truck starter question-mt8tjl.jpg
from the side. notice how the gears are farther forward on the truck starter. idk if this matters?

Truck starter question-ghjv3l.jpg
heres what were working with

Truck starter question-chj13l.jpg
stock starter held in

Truck starter question-liidnl.jpg
from the bottom. holes line up and it is easily mounted.

Truck starter question-4eqnnl.jpg
truck starter in, had to remove o2 to position it in

Truck starter question-tr5kzl.jpg
from the top truck starter. only can get top side (original long mounting block) lined up.

thoughts? is this the wrong starter? i assumed all 5.3 truck starters would work. do the farther forward gears of the truck starter have a play in this or maybe the small lip you can see right above the lower long mounting block catching on the dust cover? appreciate your help before i just stick the f'in stocker back in.

I dont know if there are different pns. I was hoping someone would know that. I was under the assumption they were all the same. The reason I got the truck one is because I dont want to shell out $200+ for a starter.

Other thoughts folks? Are there different p/ns for the truck starter? Am i missing something obvious?

The small tab on the stock car starter will break, if this happens when the starter torques it will put enough force on the long bolt and tear the outer hole on the block mount.

Sorry I had no issues with the swap. Are the truck starter bolt holes off set? Looks like it in the pics.

Truck starter question-ltajxl.jpg

Heres what I am talking about with the lips. it doesnt appear that the regular one has these lips which may be catching on the dust cover? anyone post a pic of there starter mounted I would appreciate it. in the truck starter thread there are none that i could find.

also any thoughts on the farther forward gears catching? i wouldnt think this would be an issue

thanks

I remember this thread...What a PITA. If I remember correctly I ended up finangling it in. It is a tight fit but works. It was bumping slightly on something above which wouldn't let me push it in squarely.

I used a 2005 Silverado 5.3 starter. I took the dust cover off, mounted it and then cut off only as much as what was keeping the dust cover from going back on.

I had a busted solenoid on my original starter. Cant get it at the parts store but I found a place the rebuilds starters and they sold me one for 50 bucks. Alot cheaper than buying the whole thing. So I have my original starter as a spare, or for sale.

I had the same problem trying to install a starter with the 2 long bolts mounting, finally gave up.

.
You trimmed the dust cover then put it on the starter before you mounted the starter? Or put on the cover after mounting the starter?

The dust cover is held on by 1 bolt. Unbolted and removed. Installed starter and since the plastic was so brittle due to age and heat I just snapped the top off. Then put it on. It goes up on either side just fine and functions just as originally intended.

I typically leave the dust cover loose until the starter bolts are started.
