Default AIR Removal

I'm in the process of removing my AIR system with a buddy, and we've hit a snag. We're trying to take off the little black cylinder on the driver's side, back by the intake manifold. There were two bolts near there that look like they hold on a bracket with the cylinder. We got the first nut off, circled in green, but can't get anything to fit on the nut behind this bracket, in red.

For the guys who have pulled their AIR out, how did you get this cylinder off? Did you take off the bracket, just yank the dang thing off, or is there something else holding it on we're not seeing?

We're currently looking at 3-4 different AIR removal tutorials, but didn't see anything specific about removing this piece. In other user's pics, it's just there, and then it isn't.

Could use some pointers, thanks!

Here's what to do: pull/pry the bracket off the green with a screw driver or something. Then, for the red, use a 15mm wrench and all you need is to loosen it and you can pull the bracket with the cylinder off. Then re-tighten it because it grounds some important stuff.

hmmm.. I didn't have to remove that.. Try more searchs as well, include the word ls1 tech in the search, should pop up a few threads. Theirs really good detailed pics and writeups on this. Try "air removal for dummies" that's the one I used.

Justin: Depending on the year of your car, I think there were different components in the AIR system. Pretty sure 98-00's were different from 01-02s and didn't have that cylinder.

Texan: Out of curiosity, you're saying that bracket grounds other things and needs to be put back on? My buddy's asking, we're wondering what all it grounds.

I didn't want the bracket in because i have no future plans of putting it back on, if you do it might be handy to leave it there but i wanted to clean the bay as much as i could. You need to re-tighten the bolt though I cant remember what exactly it grounds sorry, if you feel back there though you can feel grounds going to the bolt, at least on mine i could.

Sounds good guys, gives me a few more options when we start working again in the morning. And as far as what to cap off for the 02 AIR, it should just be the block off plates on the headers, and the cap or 2 behind/around the intake manifold right?

No prob. Yeah two block off plates for the air tubes and one for the egr on the headers. One cap for that cylinder your taking off, and one freeze plug or block off for the egr on the ls1 intake.

Since I'm an 02 I don't have EGR, and have an ls6 intake, so I don't think I need the freeze plug.

Lol yeah I thought about that. This may just be the incentive to go out and pick up a set.

On my bird, I don't remember there being a ground strap or wire on the back bolt of that bracket. Now that I say this I feel that I should go check.

Just an update: We did get the AIR system removed. Still couldn't get the bracket off with the 15mm gear wrench, so in the end we just pulled the cylinder up and off hard like JUSTINSWS6 said. It came off clean, and all I had to plug was the small connector on top of that cylinder (shoved half a golf tee up there and it's holding).

I had to make a 14" long extension monstrosity socket to get the pump out (plastic shroud under the pump wouldn't come off all the way so I had to work around it), but using that and some creative snip work on the hoses, everything else came out. Fired it up after finishing my exhaust and there was no vacuum leaks to be found.

Appreciate the help, it definitely saved me an hour or so of time today to get some other stuff done.
