whats the bet way to clean engine out after head removal?
just pulled the head for a bad head gasket.....when i removed it, 2 cylinders are now filled with coolant, and lots of dirt inside the cylinders, as well as the lifter trays.....i removed the trays, and there is still some dirt underneath.......not sure if air is the best way to clean this, since i obviously dont want it getting inside where the cam is.......is air my only option tho?

What i did is dry the cylinders out as best i could with paper towels, then for lifter trays and lifter bores i really could not think of anything but cheap oil to pour on it then just let it drain out the oil pan drain plug. For head bolt holes i got this idea from another forum member.

Medical mouth swabs from local pharmacy. Worked great but need a hell of alot of them like at least 40 for each head set of bolts to get completly dry thats just one method im sure theres more or better.

I blasted the coolant best i could with what i had (large air compressor and blow gun), car has sat for eight months and just did the swabs yesterday and still was sitting coolant down at the bottom of the holes.

i kinda like that pour cheap oil idea..........think im goona do that as far as the dirt in the lifter bores.........i mean i got most of it out, i mean there is only a tiny bit of dirt left.......will that be ok since its al very fine then just change the oil in 50 miles or so and new filter?

Oil filter will catch what you dont get. That is what im going to do when all my heads and cam are done drive around on the mobil one , then change to royal purple when time for dyno.

okay so as long as theres not much ill be okay i guess.........also, how watertight are the cylinders? when i left my buddies place lastnight,, there was a lot of coolant in each of the cylinders......shoulda gotten it out then but didnt think of it........is the antifreeze goona be able to get past the rings and into the oil if it sits there another few days? or would it be best to change the oil before startup? now granted assuming the rings on my 95000 ls1 are still good

The small amount of water/ coolant that gets bye is not going to hurt as long as you let it drain when you do an oil change before startup after the new head is on and gasket. If a large amount does get bye it will drain out with the oil in the crankcase. Just dont turn over the engine without changing the oil first when you put the head back on.

yea i shoulda taken car of that.....i think im goona blow everything out with an air gun........then take car of all the bolt holes........then pour oil through the lifter bores, then change it......im up to like 240 dollars invested in this.....all because i overtightend a head bolt and it snapped in the head....also, 2 bolt holes got cross threaded stupidly....
