Not my 427ci. It runs the same exact temps whether its topped off or 3 qrts low. I have 171,000 miles on my 427ci and even though it runs like a champ......it burns a ton of oil. The way I know I'm low on oil, if I don't check it as often as I should......is when I suck air and the needle drops to zero like you mentioned. It always comes right back up though, then I know to pull over immediately and add oil. I always carry it with me. This happens every month at least once. It sucks air as you leave a traffic light or stop sign too fast. Then I come off the gas and the needle pops right back up to normal pressure, then I pull over and add oil. I add 3 qrts when my pick up tube sucks air. I have to add oil every week or two depending on how much I drive.

But coolant temps......never ever change at all, not even 3 qrts low during normal driving. I've been cruising at 70mph on a trip before, got off the highway and the next time I pull away fro ma light I saw the needle go to zero. I pulled over and added oil. Temp stayed normal the whole time. Coolant does 99% of the engines cooling. Oil is almost nothing.

Nope, its not the low oil. If your oil pump failed while doing 100mph, your engine would totally seize up before you saw much temp change on the gauge.
And overheating will pretty much never be the water pump......they never stop pumping water, they just spring leaks in the seals.

And yes, there is the occasional 1 in a million water pump shaft that will shear and then the water won't get pumped anymore.

LS6427, wow, you burn and/or lose a lot of oil in little time! I'd think that you'd check it more often than to just rely on it hitting zero PSI to add more.

Everyone should check all their fluids once a month. It's just good preventative maintenance.

Ok guys turns out apparently water pump is leaking after all. So now my question is how tough is it to change it out? I'm fairly decent as a parts changer but is this something I should pay someone else to do?

pretty simple install remove belt which i would recommend to replace and are you running dexcool or regular old green antifreeze

I had the same problem last year when i had just changed the thermostat. I mixed green coolant with the original orange coolant which was not good. But my reccomendation would be pick up a new thermostat and do a flush. After i did a flush never really had another problem again. never wen over 210 even in 110 degree weather and stop n go traffic. 130 k miles. As far as the water pump, just like ^ that guy said pretty easy but a tight spot to get 2 just go at it from under the car instead of above.

Yea, I just forget to. I try to check it once a week. But sometimes I drive a ton of miles in a week. I drive 150-200 miles out of town a couple times a week sometimes.

I've seen my PSI needle suck air like 50 times.......lol.......can't hurt anything unless I drive aggressively after I see that happen. I pull over immediately, pop the hood and add 3 qrts.

Its getting yanked out soon anyway.

Videos from 2 days ago when I saw it sucking air. 2nd video is starting from a stop. See how PSI goes back up instantly after it drops...if I take my foot of the pedal.

This is what happens all the time if I forget to check it often enough.

Thats happened 50+ times over the past 3 years. 171,000+ miles.....running like a beast......

Without question with that many miles on a fully built stroker engine....my bearings are worn. I always get low oil pressure after its heated up and runs for awhile. But its running normal.
