when i am cruising my lights dim, my radio cuts out, and my volts bounce around. when something kicks on it goes down into the yellow and then bounces around just a lil bit. when i turn things off ie. radio, fog lights, heat it comes back up. my battery is fine. should i go for a stronger alternator?

situation has changed.i have already diagnosed that my gauge cluster is surging and the dealer is hopefully going to replace it. now after it surges my volts drop a lil bit. then when it does it again. the volts drop some more. today was the first hot day and it would surge everytime i hit the brakes. last night it was nice and cool out and it did it once! wtf is goin on with this psycho car

Mine was Strictly confined to the Voltage gauge. The one thing i do remember is that for some odd reason, it would only do it oonce it warmed up. I think it MIGHT have when it was cold, but at least 95% of the time, until it heated up, it was fine. Also, it NEVER over powered on the voltage gauge. It always would wack out, and lose voltage. And it seemed like under throttle or strain on the motor it would wack out. It didn't seem to do it just sitting there idling.
Good luck with it man. Have you taken it by a local auto parts store? I would. Take it and ask if they can check your alternator. They have a deal there to tell if your alternator is going bad. I'd try that first if you think it might be before you go buying anything.

Voltage regulator is going out, it's inside the alternator so the whole alternator would have to be replaced or rebuilt with a new voltage regulator. Same problem happened on my '74 Nova.
