Default Anybody experience problems with their AC unit?

Some time ago I took the car in for a regular tune up. That morning I heard what sounded like a bad belt or maybe even a pulley (bearing) going bad. After picking the car back up, I was told that the pulley was fine and that the belt was practically brand new. What I was hearing was a piece of sulifane (i know I mess that one up) hat had been sucked up and he removed it...noise went away. Well, over the past couple of weeks I have been hearing the same sound again but not constantly. Well, I start to narrow it down and have realized that its coming from my AC unit. However, only while driving. At idle, you don't hear a thing. Turn the AC off all together and you obvioulsy hear nothing at idle or while driving. Any ideas? Still blows ice cold air. How much am I looking at for repair/replacement?

Thanks,

From what you are describing, it sounds a lot like the a/c compressor making noise. The corvette has quite a bit of parts in the way when doing the compressor, and compressors are never cheap.

Yes the compressors do go bad, & the proper repair is expensive.
A new or reman compressor, drier, oriffice tube & a system flush, your over 6 bills easy.
If you let it come apart the whole way it will just put metal debris inside the system from the compressor failing.

mine crapped out on me last spring
it was making a loud ticking noise, but still blew cold air
but I never used it after the first time it started making the noise
I'll just a new one off Ebay or something, and buy a refridgerant kit or something

IS it a gridning or a clicking. If its grinding its probaly the compressor if its clicking it may be the compressor cycleing due to, restrictions, blocked condesor, low charge ect.

Mine went out last fall. It was also making the noises you described, like a bad pully. You would think they could make a AC system that lasted a little longer .

Neither....It literally sounds like what a belt wearing out or the sound of a idle pulley going bad. No clicking or grinding what-so-ever. Does that change things?

the compressor didn't sit and recycle and if it did, I couldn't hear it from outside the car. Also, I couldn't get the sound to duplicate. Could it be that its been in the garage for a week? This is beginning to tick me off.

It's probably a bearing that supports the compressor clutch. Mine started squeeling and I was lucky to have it replaced under warranty. They told me the job would have cost $1,200.00 otherwise. They were nice enough to give me a LIFETIME warranty on the compressor. You don't always have to replace the drier when you change out the compressor if you don't leave the system open for too long. I took my radiator and condenser off when I did the heads and cam and didn't swap the drier. I borrowed one of those vacuum pumps and let if run all nite until it got to -28lb and held at that value for a few hours to be sure there were no leaks. I just added a couple of cans of R134 without replacing the drier and it is making plenty of cold air.

This is exactly what my dad told me it was from the second he heard it. Guess I should have gone with his instincts.

Yes, the a/c blows very cold.
