Default 5.3 starter fit an LS1 fbody?

Hey guys I have a friend trying to pick up a starter for his TA and is looking to buy one in town so that he can get it installed tomorrow. They quoted him 170 for the starter for an ls1 and 45 for a starter for a 5.3 truck.

I have searched around about this and some people say all ls starters will interchange will some say the ls1 starter wont work on a truck but I never could find a definite answer as far as putting a 5.3 starter on the LS1 TA.

Can anyone tell me for sure whether the 5.3 starter will work?

Thanks guys

I ordered one for a truck. They are actually preferred because the corvette/camaro have one small ear that can break and take out your block along with it.

Mine did as suggested.. buy it and try it. If you do a search for "broken ear ls1 starter" you will see what i'm talking about.

Right...sometimes you just have to clearance the plastic dust cover on the the bell housing to get it to fit...but like they said try it and find out!

i didnt have to do anything besides buy another long bolt like the other to match. Autozone had it in their HELP! section. Its a kit that comes with a M10x1.5x113mm and a 45mm. My truck one was actually smaller in size compared to the LS1. i am pretty sure i asked for a 2005 5.3 chevy truck starter. just take you old one in to compare

Can anyone confirm the fitment with a GTO bellhousing? I have a GTO LS1 and the starter contacts my SW headers and I need to buy a starter with the solenoid tucked closer to the block.
I am running an auto transmission too.

You want to get a 6.0 truck starter. I just installed one that was listed for an 05 Silverado. The starter for the 5.3 version of the same truck is not the same, the pinion gear has 9 teeth vs 11 teeth for the 6.0 version (and LS1). Other than that they look identical.

To install you don't need to dremel anything, but you have to remove the O2 sensor. It will take a little playing around, doesn't go quite as easily as the old version short bolt starter, but still pretty easy. It also will help to remove the bolt holding that plastic cover over the opening to the flywheel, then bolt it back when done.

yes, I know this is an old thread, but I am having this same problem. 04 GTO LS1 auto - starter hits header. Blue, what did you ever figure out on yours?

Ok so quick question. Does anyone have a part number for the starter? I have ordered 2 and both are 9 tooth. Thanks

Default Resurrecting an old Starter question

So looking at this picture...the lug sticking out on the block, just above the oil pan edge, about 2 inches r so above the partially removed bolt, is not allowing the removal of the starter with the Sanderson headers and the manual bell housing in my 72 Ventura 5.3/T56 conversion. Anybody cut that lug off and had problems??? Will the machine shop need it as a reference point or anything crazy if I ever needed machine work?

Can't answer that question. As for a 4th gen, I used a 5.3 starter. Works fine. The teeth are shaped differently so it works on a 5.7. I've read the 6.0 starter works as well but it's a tighter fit due to the longer length.

Quick Reply: 5.3 starter fit an LS1 fbody?
