Switching out stock muffler
Yes. But if you don't want to get a catback I'd just run no muffler if you need something right now until you can afford one. Would you be able to install the muffler yourself?
^^^I was told that the stock pipes are pretty good/non-restrictive so I just went with a Magnaflow muffler and chose my own set of tips instead of going with the complete Magnaflow catback with the ugly truck cannon tips. I did it for my previous LT1 and current LS1 and it sounds great and it was a lot cheaper than the complete catback.

There was a thread in the General Discussion or Newbie forum that showed a stock muffler opened up. Seeing the internals is enough to motivate a guy to rush out and replace it. You'll definitely flow better with a Aerochamber or Magnaflow replacement.
